Which Milan Connection Survives the Next Rotation?

Milan changed three players at halftime and still lost 2-0 to Ferencváros. Rotation is necessary; rotating every useful connection at once is not.

Three changes were an admission

Rúben Amorim made three substitutions at halftime against Ferencváros. Diego Moreira replaced Yunus Musah, Mario Gila replaced Sankhoun Diawara and Christian Pulisic replaced Alphadjo Cisse. A 0-0 score had not protected the first-half plan from its own evidence.

Milan had required Lorenzo Torriani to save from Lenny Joseph in the fourth minute, Kristoffer Zachariassen in the 17th, Joseph again after a loose buildup ball in the 26th and Joseph once more from close range in the 40th. At the other end, Cisse and Gonçalo Ramos missed the clearest openings. The lineup had changed. The connections had disappeared with it.

Rotation is not the mistake. Milan face Genoa before the international break and still need to rescue a Europa League campaign that has produced three points from four matches. The mistake is rotating so many relationships at once that halftime becomes a second team selection. Amorim should name one connection that survives every European rotation, then build the changes around it.

Schedule pressure earns a defense

The reasonable case for Amorim is that the squad must be used. Milan cannot ask the derby starters to play every domestic and European minute. Torriani's start followed Mike Maignan's suspension, and European qualification will not be saved by exhausting the preferred eleven before November is over.

Ferencváros also scored from two damaging individual errors. De Winter's back pass exposed Torriani, and the midfield ricochet opened the second counter. Coaches cannot legislate every bounce or execute every pass from the technical area.

That defense deserves to be heard before it is limited. A coach can rotate the names and still preserve the nearby solutions. The next two goals showed what happened when Milan changed the responsibilities without leaving enough familiarity around them.

The first buildup had no safety rail

Ferencváros's opening goal in the 52nd minute began with a back pass from Koni De Winter. Zachariassen pressed Torriani, won the ball and left Joseph a finish into an empty net. The goalkeeper could have cleared sooner and the defender could have chosen a better pass. Individual responsibility does not make the structure innocent.

A rotated buildup needs fewer uncertainties, not more. The young goalkeeper was making his first Milan start. In front of him sat a changed defensive line and a midfield that had struggled to give the first pass a reliable destination. Sending the ball backward without presenting the next outlet transferred the entire decision to the least experienced player in the sequence.

They can decide how much familiarity surrounds a player asked to handle a new responsibility. Rotation becomes an excuse when every error is treated as isolated even though the lineup has removed the nearby solutions. Preserve one first-phase partnership and one protection behind the attack. Then judge the replacements inside recognizable jobs rather than a forty-five-minute audition followed by a mass correction.

The rescue unit still lacked protection

Moreira, Gila and Pulisic were supposed to restore width, progression and senior judgment. Milan did create more. Omari Hutchinson shot wide after halftime, Ramos released him for another effort, and Moreira later drove a low cross that Francesco Camarda could not turn on target.

Yet the second Ferencváros goal arrived in the 66th minute from another transition. A ricochet in midfield released Zachariassen, who supplied Joseph. The rescue unit had changed the attacking personnel without establishing protection behind the attack. More recognizable names do not automatically create rest defence; a team sheet is not a force field.

That matters because the previous derby win had shown a productive idea on Milan's left. Moreira could supply different final actions while teammates occupied distinct finishing spaces. Against Ferencváros, introducing him at halftime improved the threat but asked the same substitute to provide the width, the delivery and much of the recovery urgency. A useful role had become an emergency service.

Olympiacos needs a declared spine

Milan's next European trip is to Olympiacos. Before that match, Amorim should be able to answer two plain questions. Which pair owns the first pass when the opponent presses, and which player stays connected behind Moreira or the other wide attacker when Milan advances? If the answers depend entirely on the preferred eleven, the rotation plan does not exist yet.

Ferencváros went down to ten men in the 77th minute and Milan still could not score. Hutchinson and Moreira produced late attempts, but the match had already charged the price for forty-five disconnected minutes and two unprotected transitions. The next rotation will be necessary. Milan's first task is making sure one useful connection survives it.
