Will Atalanta's Buildup Reach Rome?

The 96th minute solved only the score

Lazar Samardžić struck from distance in the 96th minute, Łukasz Skorupski failed to keep it out, and Atalanta carried six points from two matches into September. One swing of the left foot settled the result. It did not revise the previous 95 minutes.

Bologna had created the better chances. Marco Carnesecchi saved from Federico Bernardeschi, Lewis Ferguson and others; Nicolò Cambiaghi hit the post after the interval. Serie A's report described Bologna as the side making the game. A substitute eventually solved one possession from distance, but Maurizio Sarri's buildup had spent too long asking the goalkeeper to preserve a score it had not controlled.

Possession arrived facing backward

Atalanta's problem was not a shortage of attackers. Charles De Ketelaere, Giacomo Raspadori and Gianluca Scamacca started. The issue was the shape of the possession reaching them. Too many early passes found a player facing his own goal or a wide receiver after Bologna had already shifted across.

Possession without a forward-facing receiver leaves the front line choosing between two bad jobs. A striker can come short and crowd the midfield, or stay high and wait behind a passing lane that never opens. Atalanta did both at different moments. Bologna could press the first pass, recover its line and attack the space left by Atalanta's slow advance.

Sarri's football does not require decorative possession. It requires the ball to move quickly enough that the next receiver inherits an advantage. Against Bologna, the pass often arrived with an instruction manual attached: control, turn, scan, discover that the window had closed.

Carnesecchi was part of the mechanism

Carnesecchi's work belongs inside the tactical diagnosis, not beside it as a separate heroic story. He denied Bernardeschi early, reacted to Ferguson near halftime and protected the score again late. Sky Sport paired him with Samardžić as the two Atalanta players who preserved and then created the win.

A goalkeeper can give a developing structure time to find itself. The danger is confusing that time with control. Bologna's post and repeated entries were not random weather passing over Bergamo. They followed Atalanta's difficulty escaping cleanly and the spaces left when the midfield tried to advance without secure support behind the ball. Carnesecchi did his job exceptionally well; the next version of the plan should need less exceptional work from him.

Sarri changed the actors and the height

Sarri recognized the stall. Nicola Zalewski and Eljif Elmas replaced De Ketelaere and Raspadori in the 56th minute. Samardžić and Nikola Krstović followed in the 68th for Éderson and Scamacca. The changes pushed Atalanta a little higher and supplied fresher carriers around Bologna's midfield.

They did not immediately create a stream of chances. Samardžić's goal vindicated the decision to add his left foot, but the finish still came from range in the 96th minute. The substitution was good; the attacking process remained incomplete.

The useful part of the changes was positional permission. Zalewski could receive wider, Elmas could connect inside, and Samardžić could step toward the ball without being the deepest midfielder. Atalanta should keep that spacing and ask for an earlier release. A late rescue can identify the right personnel without certifying the whole plan.

Six points buy coaching room

The fair counterargument is the table. Atalanta have won twice, collected six points and given Sarri space to coach without crisis noise. Strong teams often bank results while a new structure develops. Nobody should return the points because Bologna had the cleaner evening.

But a perfect record does not turn favourable outcomes into repeatable control. Bologna hit a post, forced several saves and remained level until the 96th minute. The distinction matters on September 5, when Atalanta visit a Roma side that has scored four goals in each of its first two league matches.

Rome asks for an earlier answer

The evidence should appear in the first phase: a centre-back finding a midfielder already open to the far side, that midfielder releasing a forward before the space closes, and enough protection left behind the move for the next transition.

Repeat that route three or four times in Rome and Atalanta will have something sturdier than another spectacular shot. Six points bought Sarri calm. Now the ball must buy Carnesecchi a quieter night.
