Give Krstović the Milan Start He Earned

Nikola Krstović created Atalanta's first goal and scored the next two against Venezia. Pafos should manage his minutes, not reopen the No. 9 decision before Milan.

Six minutes settled the useful question

Maurizio Sarri chose Nikola Krstović ahead of Gianluca Scamacca against Venezia. Six minutes later, that selection had already produced the kind of answer a coach should reward. Krstović released Franck Kessié for the fourth-minute opener, then met Eljif Elmas's corner with the header that made it 2-0. He completed his own scoring double in the 31st minute after Raoul Bellanova won the ball and Jonathan Rowe's shot was parried.

The goals matter, but the sequence matters more. Krstović did not wait for Atalanta to build a perfect supply line around him. He connected the first attack, occupied the penalty area for the second and stayed alive after a transition for the third. In half an hour he showed Sarri three different ways a centre-forward can help the same attack arrive.

That should establish the next league hierarchy. Atalanta visit Milan on Sunday after hosting Pafos in the Conference League on Thursday. The European match can alter the distribution of minutes. It should not erase what the Venezia selection clarified: Krstović earned the Serie A start at San Siro.

A striker can organize more than the box

The case for keeping Krstović in the league side is not a claim that two goals make him untouchable. It is that his contribution connected the players Sarri needs to make quicker. His pass invited Kessié beyond the striker. His penalty-area run gave Elmas a decisive corner target. His reaction to Rowe's saved shot turned a direct attack into a third goal before Venezia could reset.

Sky recorded Atalanta with only 36 percent possession against Venezia but 22 shots, 11 on target. The useful conclusion is not that less possession automatically creates more danger; a percentage is not a plan. It is that Krstović stayed involved without demanding one ideal service pattern. He released a runner, attacked a corner and followed a saved shot. Three origins, one legible job: help the next action reach goal before Venezia could reset.

That is where the choice between Krstović and Scamacca becomes a role decision rather than a referendum on reputation. Scamacca remains a valuable option when Atalanta need a different reference point, and the schedule will require both forwards. But rotation should solve fatigue and matchup problems. It should not make every productive performance provisional.

The cost of reopening the position immediately would be larger than one changed name on the team sheet. Kessié, Elmas, Rowe and Bellanova have just received evidence about the movements their starting striker will recognize. Preserving that reference for Milan gives the supporting attack a chance to build on shared information instead of beginning another audition.

Venezia also supplied the warning label

The fair objection is written all over the second half. Venezia arrived without a point and still made Atalanta uncomfortable after falling three goals behind. Hainaut scored before halftime. Venezia then hit the woodwork twice, had a possible second goal erased for offside and played the final minutes against ten men after Elmas's dismissal. Sky's match statistics gave the visitors 64 percent possession and 19 shots.

Corriere Bergamo described the evening as half an hour of football followed by an hour of chaos. That is the correct restraint on any grand conclusion. Krstović's output did not prove Atalanta have solved their game management, nor did a 3-1 win turn the league's bottom side into a Milan-level test. One explosive opening can coexist with a fragile remainder.

But the warning does not weaken the selection argument. It narrows it. Sarri should not ask Krstović to carry every phase or treat his brace as a guarantee of future conversion. He should reward a forward who executed the chosen role, then use the rest of the team to repair the loss of control around him. Dropping the striker would confuse the part that worked with the parts that did not.

Pafos offers the staff a chance to protect that distinction. Krstović can be rested, used from the bench or given a limited assignment without presenting the choice as a demotion. The objective is to reach Sunday with his legs available and the league hierarchy legible.

Milan will test whether the routes travel

The Milan match will remove the comforts Venezia allowed. Atalanta may have less of the ball, the first pass into Krstović will arrive under greater pressure and second chances will be rarer. That is precisely why the Venezia routes deserve another start. They did not depend on territorial dominance: one began with a forward pass, one with a corner and one with a turnover followed by a saved shot.

Watch Krstović's first three involvements at San Siro. Does he release a runner before Milan can crowd him? Does he occupy a centre-back when Rowe or Bellanova attacks the outside lane? After Atalanta lose the ball, can he remain connected enough to give the next recovery a destination? Those actions will show whether the opening half-hour was a repeatable partnership or merely a generous afternoon.

Sarri made a choice against Venezia and Krstović returned two goals, an assist and a clearer attacking map. The sensible response is not to declare the position solved forever. It is to let the decision survive until a stronger opponent disproves it. Manage him against Pafos, then give him Milan.
