Atlético's Makeshift Opener Is Still a Test of Its New Hierarchy
Injuries and late returns have scrambled Atlético's first lineup, but the choices against Málaga can still reveal who carries the attack now.
Improvisation does not erase information
Atlético Madrid will open its league season against Málaga with an attack assembled under awkward conditions. Alexander Sørloth is injured. Julián Álvarez was left out after returning late from the World Cup. Several other internationals have had little time with the group. Ademola Lookman is expected to move from the wing into the center. It would be easy to label the match an exception and learn nothing from it.
That would waste the most revealing part of an improvised lineup. When familiar answers are unavailable, a coach has to expose his priorities. Who receives the ball when progression stalls? Which runner occupies the space Lookman vacates? Who becomes the penalty-area reference without the usual strikers? Atlético's personnel problems lower the standard for fluency, but they make the internal hierarchy easier to see.
The opponent matters here. A home opener against promoted Málaga should allow Atlético enough possession to display those choices. The result remains essential, yet the method can show whether the post-Antoine Griezmann attack is being reorganized around complementary roles or simply waiting for Julián to return and restore order.
Lookman has to connect two jobs
Lookman's numbers justify the experiment. His first four months at Atlético produced nine goals and four assists, roughly one direct goal contribution every 106 minutes. The question is not whether he can threaten goal. It is whether moving him centrally preserves the qualities that made him dangerous from wider starting positions.
A fixed striker can give center backs a simple reference. Lookman should do the opposite. If he drops or drifts left, a midfielder or winger must attack the space beyond him. If he stays high, Atlético needs someone between the lines to connect possession before the attack becomes a collection of hopeful crosses. The role succeeds only if his movement changes teammates' jobs rather than merely changing the label beside his name.
That makes the supporting front line significant. Mendoza and Arnau are expected to flank him, offering a young combination rather than a settled trio. Atlético should not demand telepathy. It should demand clear occupation: one player stretching the last line, one offering underneath and one attacking the far side. The spacing will tell more about the coaching plan than the number of early touches Lookman receives.
The youngest selection can reveal the oldest habit
Sixteen-year-old Jorge Domínguez is a candidate to start at right back because Marcos Llorente and Giuliano Simeone have only recently rejoined the group. That is a remarkable individual opportunity, but it also tests an Atlético habit: whether the collective protects a vulnerable zone before the emergency becomes visible.
Domínguez should not be judged by whether Málaga attacks his side. Any sensible opponent will. The useful measure is what support appears around him. Does the right-sided midfielder narrow the passing lane? Does the nearest center back avoid being dragged too far? Does Atlético's possession structure leave protection behind the ball when the teenager advances? A makeshift selection becomes dangerous only when the system pretends it is routine.
The same principle applies to midfield. Koke and Pablo Barrios offer familiarity while Morten Hjulmand is still being integrated. If that pair controls the distances around an altered front and inexperienced flank, Atlético can make the lineup feel coherent. If the midfield chases the game, every temporary weakness will become isolated and Málaga will have obvious transitions to attack.
No excuses, no sweeping verdicts
The absences create a narrow path for interpretation. They are real constraints and should temper any judgment about polish. They should not become a blanket excuse at home against a promoted opponent. Atlético still has enough quality to control the match, recover the ball quickly and create chances through a plan that its available players understand.
A comfortable victory would not settle the season's hierarchy, either. Julián, Sørloth and the returning internationals will alter the choices as they regain fitness. The opener can establish a baseline: whether Lookman is trusted as an organizer as well as a finisher, whether the young wide players receive genuine responsibility and whether the midfield provides structure when the usual reference points disappear.
Atlético's first lineup will be temporary. The relationships it reveals do not have to be. A team with ambitions beyond routine qualification needs multiple ways to carry an attack and a system capable of protecting whichever player is asked to step in. Against Málaga, improvisation is not a reason to postpone that test. It is the reason the test is worth watching.
