Can Beşiktaş Reproduce Oh's Three Roles Against Crystal Palace?

Oh Hyeon-gyu assisted Beşiktaş's opener and scored twice between the 60th and 79th minutes at Hoffenheim. Against Crystal Palace, Beşiktaş should preserve his three attacking roles while protecting late set pieces.

Nineteen minutes, three different jobs

The first half in Sinsheim ended 0-0. By the 79th minute, Oh Hyeon-gyu had touched all three Beşiktaş goals. His involvement did not repeat itself once. That is why the burst matters beyond the 3-2 score.

At 60 minutes, a corner broke loose in the six-yard area and Oh supplied Michael Murillo for the opener. Fisnik Asllani equalised eight minutes later. Beşiktaş answered when Junior Olaitan released Oh into the left channel for the finish. Seven minutes after that, İlhan Fakılı squared a quick break and Oh scored again.

One striker became provider in a crowded box, carrier in an open channel and finisher at the end of a team counter. Vincenzo Italiano should preserve those three jobs against Crystal Palace. The goal is not to stretch a hot 19 minutes into a promise of another brace. It is to make sure the next opponent must defend every route that Hoffenheim saw too late.

The channel existed before the sprint

Beşiktaş did not spend the entire night racing forward. The useful shift came when they gave Oh room to move across the front rather than pinning him between two centre-backs.

Olaitan's pass for the second goal released the left channel. Fakılı's square ball for the third forced the goalkeeper and recovering defenders to face their own goal. In both cases, the width of the attack created the speed. Ordering Oh to run sooner would have achieved nothing if the next pass arrived into traffic.

That matters for a club whose attacking talent can tempt every possession toward the nearest famous foot. The final route cannot become a queue for touches. When the wide player receives facing forward, Oh should move immediately across the defender's line, and the pass must reward the run before the opponent turns the counter into a settled attack.

The crowded-box role keeps the plan honest

The two finishes will own the highlights, but Oh's first intervention came in traffic. His touch for Murillo at 60 minutes showed that he could help finish a crowded possession without being the shooter. That job matters against an opponent unwilling to donate the channels Hoffenheim later left open.

Beşiktaş therefore need more than a standing instruction to find Oh. They need movements around him that make his first touch consequential: a near runner when he sets the ball, an opposite arrival when he draws a defender and immediate width when the clearance offers a break. Three roles are useful because they ask three different questions of the defense.

This is the ambitious reading of the away win. Do not wait for the match to loosen before using the striker. Make Palace defend his provider role while the spaces are still tight, then preserve the channel and counter routes if the game opens.

Six points do not defend the late corner

The strongest objection is sitting in the table. Beşiktaş won away, collected six points from two Europa League matches and scored three times after halftime. Asking for more control can sound like requesting a receipt after a feast.

Kōki Machida's 87th-minute header from a corner is the answer. Hoffenheim had dragged the margin back to one and still had stoppage time to chase the equaliser. The attacking routes were excellent; the protection of the lead was unfinished.

Protection does not mean withdrawing Oh to the edge of his own area. Keep enough height to make the opponent respect the clearance, and enough midfield connection to move the ball beyond the first wave. A counterattacking threat is defensive leverage when the other side believes the next loose ball might become another run.

Let Istanbul see the design before the drama

Crystal Palace visit on October 22. Beşiktaş should not assume the same spaces will appear, so the next test is whether Oh remains useful before the field opens.

Give him an early movement inside a settled attack, a chance to set a runner after a second ball and an immediate channel run after a midfield recovery. Those actions reproduce the variety of Sinsheim without waiting for another frantic second half. If Palace step higher, Olaitan and Fakılı have already supplied the release. If they stay deep, Oh's provider role can pull a defender toward the ball and open the next arrival.

The travelling supporters saw 19 minutes turn into an away win. The home crowd should see the method sooner. Reproduce Oh's three jobs and protect the final set pieces, and Beşiktaş will have something more useful than a hot streak: a European attack that knows how to change shape without surrendering control.
