Can Cambiaghi Make Bologna's Front Three Travel?

Nicolò Cambiaghi assisted Riccardo Orsolini and Jonathan Enem in Bologna's first league win. The repeatable idea was his movement between creator and runner.

One player, two pictures

Two assists are not a system. They can reveal one. Nicolò Cambiaghi supplied both Bologna goals at Lecce without repeating the same action: first a cross for Riccardo Orsolini's 17th-minute overhead finish, then a dribble beyond his defender and a pass for Jonathan Enem to score in the 75th.

That distinction is the tactical prize inside Bologna's 2-1 win. Cambiaghi can serve a runner attacking the box or become the carrier who waits for somebody else to attack it. Bologna do not need to build a shrine to two assists. They need to preserve the decisions that produced them when Inter visit on October 17.

Cambiaghi makes the block turn

Palladino used a 3-4-2-1 with Orsolini and Cambiaghi behind Roberto Piccoli. The labels suggest two narrow attacking midfielders. The goals showed something less tidy and more useful. Cambiaghi reached a crossing position for Orsolini, then later drove beyond the first defender before Enem arrived in front of the centre-backs.

The common mechanism was not the final pass. It was Cambiaghi making Lecce turn toward their own goal. Once a defender runs backward, Orsolini can arrive from the far side instead of receiving with the whole block set in front of him. Enem can attack the goal rather than wrestle with his back to it.

That is why the front three should be judged as a chain. Piccoli did not score, but his central position gave the other attackers a reference around which to move. The useful measure is whether that reference opens a lane, not whether every job ends with the same statistic.

The match refuses a clean diagnosis

A 2-1 win can make a mechanism look cleaner than the match. Lecce took 19 shots to Bologna's 10, won 10 corners to three and put five attempts on target. After halftime the home side pushed Bologna back, and Alex Pessina's mistimed exit allowed Amin Fatah to equalise in the 64th minute.

Lecce nearly punished another uncertain Pessina intervention before Enem restored the lead. Orsolini then left with a hamstring problem after Bologna had used all five substitutions, forcing the visitors to finish with ten. Pessina's late save preserved the result. None of that resembles control.

The fair counterargument is that Bologna needed the win more than they needed elegance. Correct. Survival under pressure counts. It simply does not prove that Cambiaghi's attacking mechanism can carry the rest of the team against Inter.

Choose the run before the striker

Palladino replaced Piccoli with Enem in the 62nd minute and left Artem Dovbyk on the bench. Thirteen minutes later Enem cut in front of the defenders to meet Cambiaghi's pass. It was his first Serie A goal and the winning intervention in the coach's first league victory.

That does not settle a permanent hierarchy. It clarifies the job. When Cambiaghi carries the ball toward the byline, Bologna need a striker who attacks the front of the goal immediately. A forward waiting for different service is the wrong answer to that particular picture.

Managers call striker competition a pleasant problem. It becomes pleasant only after the service has been defined. Cambiaghi's two assists give Palladino the useful question: which forward best completes the move Bologna are actually creating?

Inter supplies the harsher sample

Inter will arrive at the Dall'Ara on October 17 with better tools to block the wing and protect the box. Cambiaghi may not receive the same space to cross or dribble. Bologna will have to manufacture it through the timing of the wing-back and central striker rather than wait for an isolated duel.

Watch the position of the far attacker when Cambiaghi receives. If Orsolini's replacement or partner attacks the back post while the striker pins the nearest centre-back, the Lecce mechanism has travelled. If all three wait on the same horizontal line, the two assists will shrink into a pleasant memory.

Lecce established the route, not its reliability. On October 17, the answer will be visible in who turns, who pins a defender and who reaches the goal when Cambiaghi moves.
