Beier's Run, Whoever Dortmund Send On
Substitutes created Dortmund's winner at Stuttgart, but Beier kept offering the central run. That job must survive the next rotation.
The run after the miss
In the fourth minute at Stuttgart, Maximilian Beier met Julian Ryerson's cross and headed wide. He could hardly have known that Dortmund would need ten shots to put one on target, according to the club's report. Nor that his next decisive opening would arrive only after two substitutes changed the supply. He kept making himself available in the middle. That is the part of Saturday's 1-0 win worth carrying into Dortmund's crowded October.
The arithmetic invites an easy complaint about finishing. It misses the player who kept giving the attack somewhere to end. Beier remained behind Serhou Guirassy, looking for the space between defenders rather than drifting away from the penalty area because an earlier opening failed. A forward cannot manufacture the pass and occupy the receiving lane at the same instant. Beier did the second job while Dortmund searched for the first.
Niko Kovač has several creators to rotate and a long October ahead. Beier's assignment should remain clear through those changes: attack the central gap when a wide player can deliver. The goal was one finish. The repeated willingness to make the run is the part a coach can keep.
A missed chance need not change the job
Stuttgart pressed high enough to force Gregor Kobel into saves from Ermedin Demirović and Deniz Undav. Dortmund had spells of control without a lead. A forward in Beier's place could have treated the missed header as a reason to come toward the ball and prove he was participating. That would have made him easier to see and harder to find in the box.
The winning move required him to sprint away from the ball. The club described a short burst to escape his marker before the low finish. Jobe Bellingham's pass was excellent, but there had to be a player still willing to trust a delivery before it existed. It is a small human demand inside a crowded tactical diagram: offer the run again after the earlier version produced nothing.
Playing behind Guirassy does not make Beier a permanent provider, nor does it excuse him from connecting midfield. It asks him to read when Guirassy holds attention and when the central lane becomes his own. At Stuttgart he stayed close enough to arrive while the substitutes changed the service. A role can be flexible without becoming vague.
What the substitutes gave him
Kovač sent on Bellingham and Konstantinos Karetsas after the hour. The Bundesliga report has Karetsas helping release Bellingham before the decisive low cross. Dortmund's club account says Karetsas had just taken the team's first shot on target. Then Karetsas found Bellingham on the right; Bellingham drove the ball across the five-yard area and Beier arrived in the 70th minute. The bench changed the supply. Beier gave it a destination.
Perhaps this was merely a substitute's excellent delivery and a close-range finish. Stuttgart still had chances after the goal; Ramy Bensebaini blocked a late shot. A one-goal away win does not prove Dortmund have solved chance creation. That objection should stay in view when Kovač decides what to carry from this move.
Karetsas moved the ball into Bellingham's path. Bellingham attacked the outside and sent it low. Beier separated from his defender in the middle. Each action narrowed the next player's decision. The exact channel may close in another match. The central responsibility should remain legible even then.
A role is more durable than a lineup
Four wins from four league matches put Dortmund first for the break, a start the Bundesliga says they had not made since 2015. That return is meaningful. The club says the October 9 home match against Werder Bremen begins nine fixtures in 30 days. Minutes will move among attackers, and relationships will be interrupted by rest and selection.
Beier's place in that rotation cannot be reduced to a reward for the Stuttgart winner. Whether he starts or enters later, the creators need to recognize his central run. If Guirassy or another forward changes position, somebody must own the finishing lane rather than leaving two players to discover the vacancy after the cross has passed them.
Against Bremen, the first low delivery across the box will show whether the role survived the team sheet. Beier should still be available after a miss or a spell without the ball. If he rests, someone else has to inherit that run. Kovač can rotate names through nine matches; he cannot ask a changing cast to guess who is meant to arrive.
