Kartal Resigned; Fenerbahçe Cannot Order Agreement
A bottle struck İsmail Kartal during Fenerbahçe's 1-1 draw with Roma. His resignation and the president's public refusal turned a security failure into a leadership failure.
Brown learned the decision from reporters
Archie Brown scored Fenerbahçe's equalizer against Roma, then learned from reporters that İsmail Kartal had announced his resignation. That is the first practical cost of a coach and president broadcasting different realities: the players are left to discover who is leading them from the people asking the questions.
The match had finished 1-1. Bryan Cristante put Roma ahead in the 39th minute, Brown replied three minutes after half-time from Mason Greenwood's pass, and Nathan Aké later hit the crossbar. It was Fenerbahçe's first Champions League league-phase match in 18 years. The result should have been the evening's argument.
Instead, Kartal said he would leave and not return. President Aziz Yıldırım said the coach would remain, explaining that a bottle had struck Kartal's head. Asking an upset coach to reconsider would be responsible. Presenting authority as a substitute for his agreement is not.
Safety precedes the power struggle
The president said a bottle struck Kartal in the head. That is a safety incident before it is material for a coaching debate. Fenerbahçe should establish what happened, address the security failure and explain what protection will change. Kartal's reaction does not need to pass a public test of composure for the incident to matter.
The order matters. First make the workplace safe. Then give the coach space to decide whether he wants to continue. Only after those two questions are answered should the club announce who is in charge. Fenerbahçe instead supplied the public with a resignation and a refusal before at least Brown had received the information internally.
Players cannot be asked to ignore uncertainty that the coach and president have created in public. They need one answer from the same leadership that will select them, correct them and ask them to absorb the pressure of this Champions League campaign.
Cooling a decision is not cancelling it
There is a reasonable defense of Yıldırım's instinct. Kartal had just endured an upsetting incident, the team had recovered from a goal down, and a permanent decision made in the hottest minutes of the evening might not reflect the coach's considered view. A president should create room for that decision to cool.
Continuity also has sporting value. Kartal returned in June for a fourth spell. Replacing a coach after eleven matches would impose another tactical vocabulary on a squad carrying the burden of five consecutive second-place league finishes.
But creating room is not the same as removing choice. The appropriate response was to pause the public verdict, meet privately and protect the coach from further intrusion. Declaring that a subordinate cannot leave turns an argument for patience into a demonstration of power. It makes any later recommitment look coerced even if Kartal genuinely chooses it.
Players cannot price this uncertainty
Squad planning usually prices uncertainty through contracts, depth and contingency options. This uncertainty sits above the team sheet. Players now have to interpret whether Kartal's instructions carry the conviction of a coach who wants the job, the obligation of a coach being held to it or the temporary authority of somebody about to leave.
That ambiguity is especially damaging because Fenerbahçe's season has started unevenly. The team sit ninth in the Süper Lig after losing two of their opening four matches, including a 2-1 defeat by Beşiktaş. The Champions League draw offered a platform, but it did not erase domestic pressure.
A board can tolerate tactical disagreement. It cannot leave the squad to guess whether the manager and president recognise the same reality. Every training correction becomes harder to receive when the room is unsure whether the person delivering it has resigned.
The board owns the next move
Fenerbahçe need a private meeting between Kartal and the board, with no performance of family hierarchy. If Kartal chooses to stay, the club should issue a joint statement in which he says so directly, alongside a specific account of the security review and support offered. The words must belong to both parties.
If he still intends to leave, the board should accept that decision and appoint an interim coach while conducting a proper search. Contractual questions can be resolved without pretending that reluctant leadership is functional leadership. The expensive error would be preserving the appearance of continuity while every important relationship underneath it has already changed.
Aston Villa away and Liverpool at home remain on Fenerbahçe's Champions League schedule. Those matches will test the football. Before then, the board must settle who owns the plan and whether he has chosen to own it.
The calendar cannot create consent
The Roma draw showed a team capable of responding after half-time. Brown's equalizer and Aké's late effort against the crossbar offered sporting evidence worth carrying forward. The post-match handling then buried it beneath a question no squad should have to answer through reporters.
Yıldırım may yet persuade Kartal that one frightening night should not end his tenure. Persuasion would be leadership. Publicly announcing that the coach has no choice is something else: an attempt to convert authority into agreement.
Fenerbahçe waited 18 years for this Champions League return. Before Aston Villa away or Liverpool at home, the club needs either Kartal's voluntary joint commitment or an accepted exit. Anything between those outcomes leaves the players working beneath an authority chart that cannot tell them whether the coach has chosen to stay.
