Two Minutes Kept Feyenoord's Midfield Plan Alive
Como led in the 18th minute; Gjivai Zechiël answered in the 20th. Feyenoord's rapid reset and midfield pressure mattered more than the fortunate third goal.
At 18 minutes, De Kuip tightened
Assane Diao put Como ahead in the 18th minute at De Kuip. For the next possession, the danger was not only the score. Feyenoord could have let one transition turn the ground's urgency into a demand for the next pass to solve everything.
Gjivai Zechiël equalized in the 20th. He received near the edge of the area and drove the response through before the match could become frantic. De Kuip supplied the volume; the players supplied the reset. Those two minutes are the most useful part of Feyenoord's 3-2 win.
After a 5-1 defeat by Barcelona in the league-phase opener, the first three points did not require a performance scrubbed of doubt. They required a team that could absorb a new setback and keep playing. Feyenoord answered with the ball before anyone needed a speech about character.
Compression gave the noise a direction
Feyenoord's early circulation had been too horizontal. Oussama Targhalline produced the first dangerous cross, but Como kept the play in front of midfield until Diao escaped on the right. After the equalizer, the home side started winning the smaller contests around the next pass. Zechiël advanced, Charles Vanhoutte protected the return ball and Targhalline kept Como's creators surrounded rather than chased. Compression shortened both the pass forward and the sprint required after losing it.
The supporter discussion cited with the match reports repeatedly returned to that unit, including the pressure around Nico Paz. Applause is not tactical proof, but the observation fits the play: Feyenoord's control came from compressing the middle, not from attacking louder.
That distinction belongs at De Kuip. Recoveries and tackles can lift the ground; the ground can make the next press feel possible. Marketing departments like to bottle atmosphere. Midfielders have the less glamorous job of giving it somewhere to go. Without the short distances around the ball, noise becomes pressure on the home player as quickly as it becomes pressure on the visitor.
The right side created the lead; fortune padded it
Anis Hadj Moussa put Feyenoord ahead seven minutes after halftime. He received on the right, shifted the ball onto his left foot and struck toward the near post. Later, another Hadj Moussa effort took a deflection, hit the post and rebounded off Robert Sánchez for the own goal that made it 3-1.
The first action came from something Feyenoord could reproduce: better spacing on the same side, a forward-facing winger and a midfield close enough to begin another attack. The third goal did not. A deflection, the post and Sánchez's rebound supplied the final touch. The lane was earned; the margin was fortunate.
That distinction matters because Tasos Douvikas scored in the third minute of added time. A cleaner performance closes the match without turning the final whistle into relief. Como's late movement and the own goal make a 3-2 score too unstable to prove complete control.
The two-minute response carries more weight. Zechiël had restored the match before fortune intervened, and Hadj Moussa had already put Feyenoord ahead through a repeatable right-sided entry. One ricochet can go anywhere. Compressing midfield, recovering the next ball and finding the winger facing forward can travel. The distinction is not an attempt to subtract joy from the third; it is how Feyenoord decide what to rehearse from it.
Take the reset to Telstar
Feyenoord travel to Telstar on October 17. The opponent and competition change, but the test remains close to the Como lesson. If the first attack fails or the first transition is conceded, does the midfield rebuild the pressure, or does the team start chasing a crisis that has not arrived?
The distances between Zechiël, Vanhoutte and Targhalline after a lost ball will say more than another fortunate bounce. So will the timing of Hadj Moussa's next forward-facing reception. Most of all, a lead should be managed with the same care as the two minutes after Como scored.
The 3-2 gave Feyenoord their first league-phase points. The next gain is behavioral: concede, reset, compress the middle, find the right side. If that sequence survives away from De Kuip — and if the final minutes become less dramatic — the Como night will have built more than a table entry.
