Let Samuel Lino Leave Flamengo's Left Touchline

Samuel Lino's first Brazil goals came after he replaced Vinícius Júnior and moved beyond a fixed left-wing job. Flamengo should preserve his inside routes around Pedro.

Two goals came from more than one left-wing picture

An international brace can grow two sizes before the player reaches the arrivals hall. Samuel Lino's first two Brazil goals deserve attention, but Flamengo should keep them in proportion.

Lino replaced Vinícius Júnior at halftime against India. His first goal followed a move in which Flamengo teammate Pedro helped supply him. The second came from Lino attacking off the left and finishing an individual run. Same nominal position, different route to goal.

Brazil won 4-0 in Kolkata, with Estêvão and Pedro scoring before Lino's second-half double. The opponent and score discourage grand declarations, but the combination is useful for Flamengo. Lino did not need to remain glued to the touchline to preserve width. He could begin left, move around the centre-forward and still attack the outside lane when the space demanded it.

Flamengo should formalize that freedom rather than celebrate the goals as an international souvenir. Lino is most expensive to defend when the left side describes his starting address, not his property boundary.

Forty-nine appearances are the baseline

The Brazil goals landed on top of a real Flamengo sample. The club reported in September that Lino had reached 14 goals and 16 assists across 49 appearances in 2026. Independent analysis from ge had already identified his expanding repertoire, his combinations with Giorgian de Arrascaeta and his ability to perform more than one attacking and defensive function.

Those numbers matter because they keep India in proportion. A brace against a heavily overmatched opponent does not create the role. It reveals two parts of a role that has been producing throughout the season: arrive inside another attacker and create directly from the flank. Lino can be the runner after Pedro connects the play, then become the carrier when the passing lane closes.

A fixed winger is easier to account for. The fullback can hand him to a midfielder, show him outside and wait for the cross. Lino moving into the half-space changes the defender's arithmetic. Follow him and the overlap opens; release him and Pedro gains a nearby combination; hesitate and Lino reaches the box facing forward.

Pedro makes the freedom cheaper

Pedro marked his first Brazil start with a goal and an assist. His connection with Lino is not a decorative club subplot. A centre-forward who can occupy the central defenders and return a pass makes Lino's movement possible without asking Flamengo to abandon its reference point.

That should influence how Flamengo divide the jobs. They do not need to choose between Pedro as a fixed target and Lino as an isolated dribbler. The useful relationship lets Pedro pin or connect while Lino changes height around him. It also gives the opposite winger and Arrascaeta a clearer read: somebody must hold the far side while the left side collapses inward.

The opportunity cost is defensive. If Lino leaves the touchline and the fullback advances, Flamengo need a midfielder ready to protect the vacated lane. Freedom without rest defence is just a counterattack wearing a nice shirt. The movement works when the team budgets for it before possession is lost.

India cannot settle the hard questions

Brazil were expected to win and did not face the resistance Flamengo will meet in a title race. Lino entered against a defence that had already spent a half chasing Brazil, and his second goal arrived deep in stoppage time. It would be unserious to use the double as proof that every opponent should surrender the same spaces.

There is another fair objection. Lino's versatility has value precisely because a manager can change his position. Prescribing an inside-left route too rigidly would replace one touchline cage with another. The answer is not a permanent coordinate. It is a declared menu of movements tied to the players around him.

Against a narrow block, let Lino begin wider and attack the defender before moving inside. Against a fullback who follows aggressively, use Pedro as the wall and send Lino beyond him. Against pressure, allow the forward to drop while Lino becomes the highest runner. The position can vary; the relationships cannot be improvised every week.

Santos should reveal the actual menu

Flamengo visit Santos on October 8. The next test is not whether Lino repeats a Brazil brace. It is whether the club can produce both of the routes India exposed while keeping enough balance behind the attack.

Track Lino's first five receptions. If each arrives with his heels near the paint, Flamengo have treated international recognition as permission to repeat the safest picture. If one comes inside Pedro, another releases the overlapping runner and a third lets Lino face the fullback, the role has retained its unpredictability.

Lino said he would return to Flamengo happy, confident and aware of the competition around Brazil's left side. The club does not need to solve that national-team contest. It needs to keep supplying the varied work that earned him a place in it. Two goals in Kolkata were the headline. Leaving the touchline without leaving the structure is the Flamengo plan worth keeping.
