Freiburg Kept Ginter; Let the Next Defender Learn Beside Him

Matthias Ginter's extension preserves an established defensive reference. Freiburg should use his minutes to develop the next organiser beside him, not postpone that transition.

Two Freiburg careers inside one extension

Matthias Ginter's new Freiburg contract contains two careers at once. One began in the club's academy before his Bundesliga debut in January 2012, continued through Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach, then returned home in 2022. The other is the one Freiburg must design now: an experienced centre-back still earning his place while helping the next organiser grow beside him.

The club did not disclose the length or financial terms. It did supply the scale of the relationship. Ginter, now 32, has made 255 competitive appearances for Freiburg, with 20 goals and 19 assists. That is more than a sentimental renewal, and Freiburg should demand more from it than familiar lineups.

Keeping Ginter is the easy part of continuity. Making his understanding useful to somebody who will one day play without him is the real squad-building decision.

Performance comes before the handover story

Ginter is not staying as a ceremonial tutor. Bundesliga data credit him with three assists in three league appearances this season, along with 30 tackles won and 13 aerial duels won. Last season ended with Freiburg as Europa League runners-up. The extension rewards a defender contributing to an ambitious team, not a former player waiting for a coaching badge.

That matters because succession language can become unfair to both people in the pairing. The senior player gets treated like a walking seminar. The younger one becomes a project whose mistakes are narrated as tuition fees. Footballers still have matches to win, opponents to read and their own careers to protect.

The strongest case against a deliberate handover is therefore simple: select the best partnership and let development happen in training. Ginter should not lose minutes merely to stage the future, and another defender should not receive them as a gift. Freiburg's job is to create competitive responsibility, not a testimonial that lasts two seasons.

Learning has to happen at match speed

Training can teach the call. Matches reveal whether a defender can make it while the striker changes direction, the full-back has already gone and the whole ground has supplied contradictory advice. The next defensive organiser needs meaningful minutes beside Ginter in games where the line must solve real pressure.

Freiburg can rotate the second centre-back without rotating every instruction around him. Keep Ginter's role clear, then give one developing partner a run long enough to learn the distances: when to follow a forward, when to pass him on and when to refuse the attractive first pass that would expose the midfield. Do not distribute those minutes so thinly that each appearance becomes an isolated audition.

Ginter's value in that arrangement is not that he whispers wisdom after every mistake. It is that his positioning provides a stable reference. A teammate can recognize where the line should be because one part of it stops moving unnecessarily. That is teaching by sharing the same problem.

The contract also belongs to the staff

Freiburg must not outsource succession to the player. Coaches should define the younger defender's decisions, review the clips and protect the partnership from becoming a weekly referendum. Recruitment staff must still judge whether the eventual replacement is already inside the squad. Ginter can model standards; he cannot be made responsible for another professional's entire development.

The undisclosed contract length makes the timeline impossible to audit from outside. That increases the importance of observable choices. Does the club use planned rotation to build one credible alternative? Does a younger partner keep responsibility after an error, or does the lineup immediately retreat to the safest veteran combination? Does the buildup still function when Ginter is rested?

Those questions keep the extension connected to team planning. Without them, 'continuity' can become a polite word for discovering the same dependency a year later.

Make the next absence ordinary

A successful Ginter extension will not be proved by the announcement photograph or even by his next excellent afternoon. It will be proved when Freiburg can remove him from a lineup without changing the defensive language of the team. The first pass still has an owner. The line still moves together. Somebody else recognizes when the duel is less important than protecting the space behind it.

Ginter returned to the club that developed him and was part of the team that reached a European final. He has earned a role that respects his present rather than hurrying him into the past. The best version of that respect is to compete beside a defender trusted with real decisions, not to stand alone as the answer to every one of them.

Freiburg kept their reference point. Now the staff should use the contract window to make his eventual absence feel ordinary. Give the next organiser enough work beside Ginter that, when the handover comes, it looks less like inheritance and more like a job already learned.
