Four shots on target made Fulham's 0-0 draw at Anfield defensively credible. Liverpool produced three. Those numbers do not turn an away point into a hidden victory; they explain why Fulham's first Premier League point under Álvaro Arbeloa involved more than Liverpool failing to finish.
The 0-0 scoreline invites the usual praise for resolve. Resolve is lovely, but it is not a shape. Fulham's ten attempts, against Liverpool's 14, gave the defensive work a release valve. Alisson had to make a smart save, and Jérémy Jacquet produced a goal-line clearance. Those actions matter because they made every Liverpool attack carry a cost: lose the ball carelessly and Fulham still had a route to the other goal.
That is the part Arbeloa should bring back to Craven Cottage against Manchester United in the next league match. The first point cannot become an excuse to retreat more deeply. Fulham were hardest to squeeze when the defensive plan preserved a counterattack instead of treating possession as contraband.
Liverpool's imprecision belongs in the verdict
The strongest counterargument is that Liverpool helped. Andoni Iraola's side were imprecise, failed to reproduce the attacking speed of their previous two wins and drew for the third time in four league matches. Fulham benefited from an opponent whose expensive front line never found a convincing gear. A clean sheet against a blunt attack does not automatically prove a season has turned.
Fair. It still took Fulham to keep the central spaces crowded, contest second actions and avoid the kind of late collapse that can turn a disciplined afternoon into a familiar defeat. Liverpool had 14 shots, not zero, and the home side kept introducing fresh attackers. The visitors' structure survived the substitutions and the late urgency.
The distinction matters. Fulham should not claim they solved Liverpool. They can claim they gave Liverpool fewer clean decisions than expected and kept enough threat to prevent pressure from becoming permanent. That is a modest conclusion, but after three losses modesty and usefulness make a better partnership than a grand declaration of revival.
The outlet kept the other goal relevant
Liverpool edged expected goals 1.13 to 0.71 and possession belonged largely to the home side. Nobody needs to turn Fulham into the hidden winner of a match that finished level. The shot map instead describes a contest in which Liverpool still had to respect the space behind their attacks: Fulham took ten efforts, and four were accurate.
That accuracy was not decorative. Fulham advanced into positions worth protecting, and Alisson's save kept the away plan from becoming a victory. Jacquet's clearance did the same job at the other end. For a side that lost its opening three league matches, those moments at Anfield are not a moral trophy. They are evidence Arbeloa can examine without pretending the work is complete.
Premier League reputations love to do tactical work for famous teams. Anfield is supposed to supply pressure, inevitability and a soundtrack. Fulham refused to let the venue finish the argument. Their exits interrupted the noise often enough that the game stayed a contest rather than a ninety-minute clearance drill.
Home possession is the harder examination
Manchester United will create a different match at Craven Cottage. Fulham may have more responsibility to advance the ball, occupy the opposition half and decide when to commit numbers. The Anfield plan cannot simply be photocopied with the address changed. The test is whether its principle survives: protect access to goal without disconnecting the players who can punish a turnover.
That means judging the next performance by the distance between Fulham's defensive block and their first forward option. If the outlet is isolated, United can recycle attacks with little fear. If Fulham can find that player early and move support around him, the visitors must keep defenders honest. Four accurate efforts at Anfield set a sensible floor, not a magical quota.
Arbeloa also has to resist the seduction of the clean sheet. Coaches can fall in love with a zero because it asks fewer awkward questions than an attacking plan. Fulham's zero mattered precisely because their four shots on target made it active rather than accidental.
Measure the seconds after the tackle
One away draw does not repair a start of three defeats, and Fulham's longer away record remains poor. It does, however, identify the difference between compactness and surrender. Compactness shortens the pitch for the opponent. Surrender shortens it for everybody wearing your shirt.
Against Manchester United, watch what happens immediately after Fulham win the ball. Is there a forward pass available? Does a second runner join it?
