Keep Gaziantep's Early Decisions; Discount the Four

The score and the chance count disagree

Gaziantep FK turned a 1.23 expected-goals total into four goals before halftime at Göztepe. Halil Dervişoğlu scored in the fifth minute, Myenty Abena followed in the tenth, and Kacper Kozlowski struck in the 34th minute and again in first-half stoppage time. The scoreboard screamed dominance. The chance count, rather more quietly, asked for a recount.

Göztepe finished with 3.01 expected goals from 18 shots to Gaziantep's 13, while possession was almost even at 49-51. None of that repossesses an earned 4-2 win. It does separate the decisions that created useful attacks from a conversion rate Gaziantep cannot sensibly order again. When the score and chance profile disagree this loudly, celebrating one and interrogating the other are not opposing acts.

Keep the speed of the decisions

Halil and Abena scored before Göztepe could settle. The useful quality was not merely surprise. Gaziantep turned its first attacking windows into actions with an ending instead of circulating until the defence recovered.

Kozlowski's brace supplies the sharper clue. The attacking midfielder kept arriving where the first movement had created a second problem. That is how direct football becomes more than a hopeful first pass: one runner fixes the defence, another treats the next space as an appointment. The second action, not the formation label, gives the attack its shape.

Gaziantep's opening made those responsibilities look immediate. There was no committee meeting over the final ball. Preserve that clarity, because an attack can repeat the timing of its runs even when it cannot repeat four finishes from a modest chance total. The distinction is practical. Coaches can rehearse recognition, supporting distance and the next run; they cannot rehearse every shot past the goalkeeper.

Finishing deserves its share

The strongest case against skepticism is simple: finishing is a skill, and an expected-goals model cannot return four goals for store credit. Correct. Gaziantep earned every finish. Halil, Abena and Kozlowski should not apologize because the model expected less.

But a useful review asks what the team can request again, not what the scoreboard has already deposited. Early recognition and committed runs can become habits. Four goals from 1.23 expected goals describe a superb night, not a weekly attacking budget. That is praise with a boundary, not an attempt to explain away the pleasure of an away win.

The second half lowered the certainty

Juan scored for Göztepe seven minutes after the restart and added a penalty in stoppage time. Between those goals, Ogün Bayrak was sent off in the 72nd minute. Gaziantep played the last stretch with a three-goal cushion and a numerical advantage, yet Göztepe still ended with the larger shot and chance profile.

Game state explains some of that. A side that had led 4-0 should not attack as if goal difference has insulted its family. It can concede territory, protect central space and make the opponent spend time. Still, conceding territory is different from surrendering the next action. If the first outlet disappears and every clearance returns, control becomes a countdown with better branding. Ten-man Göztepe could not certify the defensive structure that the next opponent will examine. The valuable review therefore starts before Bayrak's dismissal, when both teams still had eleven and Gaziantep had to connect a first escape to a second pass.

Twenty minutes against Fenerbahçe

Gaziantep host Fenerbahçe on September 13. The sensible response is not to retreat from the aggression shown in İzmir. It is to give that aggression a second phase against an opponent likely to charge more for each loose pass. An early run that ends in a blocked shot can still be a good attack if Gaziantep are positioned to win what follows.

Watch the opening 20 minutes. If Halil can occupy the center-backs while Kozlowski arrives beyond the first duel, Gaziantep will retain its best route. Then watch what follows a failed attack: does support arrive quickly enough to recycle possession or stop the counter? That sequence will say more about the method than the next shooting percentage. Four goals should buy confidence, not amnesia. Keep the early decisions. Budget for ordinary finishing.
