Can Grêmio's Three-Centre-Back Shape Carry November?

Grêmio followed a 1-0 win at Coritiba with a 2-0 victory over Athletico and moved to 15th. The table changed because a three-centre-back platform finally repeated; November will test its durability.

Fifteenth place is a door, not shelter

Grêmio beat Athletico 2-0 and stepped out of the relegation zone. CBF's table put the club 15th on 37 points after 33 matches, one point above 17th-place Corinthians. The relief is real. So is the distance between leaving danger on Thursday and staying clear through December.

The useful change is not the arithmetic by itself. Renato Portaluppi repeated a three-centre-back structure after the 1-0 win at Coritiba, and Grêmio produced consecutive league victories. Supporters can carry the table out of the Arena. The team must carry the platform: three defenders protecting the centre, wing-backs available for the next pass and a midfield close enough to contest the second ball.

The first minute announced the method

Grêmio's official report records Wallace hitting the post from a corner in the first minute. That chance did more than warm the crowd. It established where the home side intended to make the match physical and how quickly the extra centre-back could become an attacker without leaving the rest of the shape undefined.

Marlon's free kick went through the area for the opening goal in the 38th minute. Seven minutes after halftime, his corner reached Fabián Balbuena after a defensive touch, and the centre-back finished the second. Both goals came from dead balls, which limits any grand claim about open-play control. It also shows why the structure mattered: the same defenders selected to protect Grêmio were permitted to decide the match at the other end.

That is not free attacking power. Every centre-back sent into the area creates a responsibility behind the delivery. Grêmio managed it because Erick Noriega and Mathías Villasanti stayed connected to the clearance zones and because the back line recovered together. Set-piece threat and transition protection were two halves of the same job.

Weverton keeps the verdict conditional

Athletico still found the spaces that keep this from being a solved system. Kevin Viveros ran through in the tenth minute, forcing Weverton to leave his area. In the second half, the goalkeeper saved from João Cruz and then reacted to Aguirre's header. Noriega later blocked Mendoza's shot during the final pressure.

Those interventions are part of a team performance, not evidence against one. They do define the next improvement. The wing-backs cannot both read a two-goal lead as permission to stay high, and the midfield cannot let one pass turn three centre-backs into a retreating line. Five defenders on a team sheet can still produce a very large doorway.

The strongest case for trusting the shape is that Grêmio have now won twice with it while conceding no goal. Fair enough. Clean sheets are evidence. They are not an exemption from examining how often the goalkeeper had to repair the route between midfield and defence.

The semifinal asks for controlled ambition

The next rung arrives immediately. Atlético Mineiro visit the Arena on Sunday for the first leg of a Copa do Brasil semifinal. A home first leg invites Grêmio to attack, but the shape cannot become three centre-backs watching both wing-backs leave at once. One side can advance while the far side protects the counter.

Renato can change names without abandoning the distances. Noriega and Villasanti stayed close enough to the second ball against Athletico; whichever midfield starts the semifinal must preserve that protection. The structure earns trust only if it can support ambition without making every lost delivery Weverton's emergency.

The Maracanã asks for an exit

Three days after the semifinal, Grêmio travel to face league-leading Flamengo. That match may demand long stretches without the ball. Rotation will tempt Renato to treat it as a separate team with a separate survival plan.

The first outlet still has to remain close enough to Carlos Vinícius or Martin Braithwaite that a clearance becomes possession rather than another wave. Adding a defender must not subtract the midfield relationship that makes an exit possible. Otherwise Grêmio will have more people behind the ball and fewer ways to leave.

The survival math needs observable work

Local analysis calculated that seven more points would take Grêmio to 44, a total with a strong chance of safety. The remaining league opponents are Flamengo, Bahia, Santos, Corinthians and Mirassol. That list refuses a comfortable route: two top-six tests, a direct confrontation and opponents who can make one loose second ball expensive.

So measure November before totaling it. Does the far wing-back recover when the near side attacks? Does Noriega receive the first pass after a regain instead of watching it fly over midfield? Can Grêmio defend a corner clearance with the same concentration used to attack Marlon's delivery? Those actions are more informative than saying the side has rediscovered fight. Relegation battles have never suffered from a shortage of fight in the press conference.

Grêmio escaped the zone because two results finally connected. Staying out requires the same structure to survive the semifinal, the Maracanã and the rotation between them. If it does, 44 points may arrive as the consequence of a team. If it does not, the calculator will be asked to perform another job no formation could.
