Build Juventus's Next Attack Before the Long Shot

Kerim Alajbegovic and Jérémie Boga scored from distance after Juventus changed the second half. The finishes were exceptional; the useful selection work happened before them.

Shooters are allowed to punish a block

A deep defence leaves space outside the box, so somebody should shoot. Refusing on principle would turn expected-goal caution into a hall monitor with a whistle. Juventus have players capable of punishing that space, and Kerim Alajbegovic and Jérémie Boga did exactly that against Napoli.

Alajbegovic bent a left-footed effort in off the far post after 70 minutes. Seventeen minutes later, Boga curled a right-footed finish toward the same side. Juventus celebrated the club's 129th birthday with a 2-0 win and two goals built for the replay package.

Now comes the less photogenic work. Two exceptional finishes cannot become a weekly attacking budget. Luciano Spalletti should preserve the substitution order and spacing that put fresh players in useful shooting positions, while accepting that the final accuracy belongs to the outlier column.

The first goal had an author before Alajbegovic

The first half ended goalless, but Alajbegovic had already dribbled beyond two defenders to create a chance for Bremer, shot over from 12 yards and forced Alex Meret into a difficult stoppage-time save. His goal did not arrive from a player wandering into the match for one lucky swing. Juventus had repeatedly moved him toward the zone where a left-footed action could threaten.

Edon Zhegrova made the decisive version after replacing an ineffective Randal Kolo Muani. He beat Amir Rrahmani and released Alajbegovic outside the area. Alajbegovic moved onto his left foot and finished from roughly 20 yards. Napoli assistant Marco Landucci later said his team should have pressed the shooter instead of sitting deep.

That admission describes the useful part better than another adjective for the strike. The defender had to respect Zhegrova's dribble, the release and Alajbegovic's shot. The finish cannot be ordered for every match. The uncertainty before it can.

Boga preserved the lane with a different foot

Alajbegovic left two minutes after scoring and Boga took the same nominal place. Napoli then lost Luca Marianucci to a second yellow in the 75th minute, so the second goal came against ten players. That advantage must sit beside every claim about the substitution.

Even so, Boga did not simply wait in empty grass until the clock invited a shot. Juventus circulated the ball left, he came inside onto his right foot and finished across Meret. The replacement changed the preferred foot while preserving the inward route. A substitution can maintain a job without producing a photocopy.

This is where squad planning becomes more useful than ranking names. Alajbegovic is a young left-footed attacker who can receive between the line and the flank. Boga approaches from the opposite angle, and Zhegrova can disturb the first defender. Spalletti does not need to declare one permanent winner among three tools. He needs the starting lineup and bench order to tell each one when the inside lane belongs to him.

Eighteen attempts do not normalize two finishes

Juventus took 18 shots, yet the match stayed goalless for 69 minutes. Napoli had lost Kevin De Bruyne and Giovanni Di Lorenzo at halftime, while Weston McKennie did not return for Juventus. Forced changes altered the second half before Spalletti made the attacking substitutions that now look decisive.

Two excellent strikes converted the superior shot count into a deserved win. They did not prove Juventus can wait 70 minutes for the same accuracy against every compact defence. Marianucci's red card also made the closing phase more generous than the next opponent is obliged to be.

Proportion is the point, not prohibition. Keep taking the shot when the defender sinks. First make that defender choose between stepping to Zhegrova, closing Alajbegovic or guarding the lane behind him. The order of those problems is more repeatable than the ball kissing the far post.

AZ and Fiorentina should force the earlier choice

Juventus visit AZ Alkmaar on November 5 and Fiorentina on November 8. The selection question is not whether Alajbegovic has earned a coronation or Boga has reclaimed a permanent place. It is whether Juventus can create the same three-way decision before the match reaches its final third.

Watch the first reception outside the box. Is Zhegrova close enough to draw the full-back before releasing Alajbegovic? Does Nick Woltemade occupy the nearest centre-back so the shooter can come inside? If Boga enters, does the ball reach him while the defence is shifting rather than after it has built a wall? Those measurements survive when the replay does not.

Alajbegovic and Boga supplied the spectacular answers. Spalletti's work is to keep posing the earlier questions: who receives, which defender steps out and which lane opens behind. Solve that sequence often enough and a long shot can remain a weapon, not a standing request for birthday magic.
