A Safer First Phase for Ifeanyi Ndukwe
Ndukwe's first Levante start supplied both the mistake Sevilla punished and the final equalizer. Luís Castro should keep the trust while changing the first-phase picture around him.
One debut, two labels too many
Ifeanyi Ndukwe's first Levante start has already been compressed into a neat story. His short back pass gave Robbie Ure the opening goal; his finish in the 99th minute rescued a 3-3 draw with Sevilla. Villain became hero before the referee could find the tunnel. It is a lovely headline and a poor development plan.
Ndukwe is 18. Luís Castro trusted him after two substitute appearances and an Austria Under-21 trip, according to AS. That trust should survive the error and the equalizer. The more important decision is what Levante put around his next first pass if Deportivo press on Friday.
A young centre-back does not learn much from being told that character erased structure. Ndukwe showed character by staying in the match. Levante must show structure by making sure his next buildup picture offers more than a risky return to the goalkeeper.
Sevilla closed the obvious door
Cadena SER reported that Sevilla's high press produced the 13th-minute opener. Ndukwe tried to send the ball back to Mathew Ryan, left it short and allowed Ure to finish. The pass was the clear individual mistake. The surrounding problem was collective: Levante struggled to escape the press or establish themselves in Sevilla's half after it.
That distinction is not an attempt to hide responsibility inside tactical fog. Ndukwe played the pass. He owns it. But when the nearby exits have narrowed, an 18-year-old defender is being asked to solve a geometry problem after the angles have disappeared.
The repair can be visible and modest. A midfielder can drop closer to the first line, allowing the full-back to create a diagonal exit rather than joining the same crowded lane. Ryan then becomes a genuine third option before the first runner arrives, while the forward pins a defender instead of checking toward the ball. None of that guarantees a clean escape. It does make the next error less pre-written.
The comeback belongs to the team
Levante trailed 2-0 after Félix Correia scored in the 55th minute. Iván Romero answered one minute later. Dela volleyed the 91st-minute equalizer, Isaac Romero restored Sevilla's lead in the 94th, and Ndukwe converted the final loose ball five minutes after that. Six goals arrived, four of them after the 55th minute, and the match stopped behaving like a controlled experiment.
The strongest case for the simple hero story is that Ndukwe earned it emotionally. Plenty of players disappear after giving away an opening goal. He kept defending, kept joining the final pressure and found the finish that turned defeat into a point. Castro publicly praised the mentality required to produce that response.
Keep the praise. Remove the implication that a goal cancels a passing problem. Centre-backs cannot plan to repay buildup errors at the other end in minute 99. If that becomes the lesson, Levante will have converted resilience into a loophole.
The next team sheet is only half the answer
The easiest next move would be to protect Ndukwe by taking him out of the side. That would confuse shelter with development. Castro had a reason to choose him, and one wild first start supplied evidence of recovery as well as evidence of risk. The responsible response is another opportunity with clearer support.
Levante travel to Deportivo on October 16, four days after the Sevilla draw. The short turnaround makes the instruction especially important. Do not ask Ndukwe to prove his nerve by repeating the same unsupported pass until it works. Ask the players around him to make the pitch wider and the first decision simpler.
Then judge the right thing. Does he scan before receiving? Can he find the midfielder before the press locks? When the return to Ryan is necessary, has Levante moved to create the goalkeeper's next ball? Those are development questions. Whether Ndukwe can score another stoppage-time equalizer is carnival planning.
His first start ended with the Ciutat de València shouting his name. His second should begin with teammates showing for the ball. That is how Levante turn a dramatic night into a useful one.
