Give Málaga's Newcomers Jobs Before Espanyol

Málaga have three points after seven matches while their newcomers have had uneven availability. The Espanyol lineup should assign jobs, not stage a mass unveiling.

The table is trying to pick the team

Three points after seven La Liga matches can turn selection into theatre. Every summer arrival on the bench or training pitch starts to look like the answer the coach has refused to reveal. Málaga's 1-0 loss at Getafe made that pressure easy to understand: Iván Azón scored in the 84th minute after Alfonso Herrero had repeatedly kept the game level.

The table demands change. It does not pick a coherent team. AS counted seven newcomers apart from returning loanee Carlos Dotor, while Dotor had made six starts and played 467 league minutes. Availability and role have varied across the group. Against Espanyol, each available newcomer should enter the lineup only with a defined job.

Sort the signings by problem

The newcomers cover different positions and different kinds of risk. Juan Berrocal made a late debut at Celta and then started at centre-back at Getafe. José Salinas started at full-back in the same match. Pablo Martínez replaced Dani Lorenzo in midfield after 66 minutes. Juan Cruz returned to group training on October 5; Jens Cajuste remained unavailable in that update.

Putting every name under the single heading of signings hides the coaching decision. Berrocal should be judged on whether the back line can begin attacks and control the first direct ball. Salinas changes the timing of a wide outlet. Martínez changes the midfield's next pass. Cruz, when ready, can change how Málaga hold width. None of those jobs automatically creates a goal, and attempting every change at once can break the relationships the promoted core already understand.

The transfer window is not a formation. It is a set of options, which is less glamorous and considerably more useful. Sort those options into four questions: who improves the buildup, who supplies width, who connects midfield and who protects the first transition after possession is lost? Then select from the answers.

Getafe supplied the role audit

Málaga's Getafe performance offers a cleaner diagnostic than the league table alone. Dotor had a goal disallowed for offside before half-time. Herrero then made consecutive saves after the interval and another stop from a header. The deciding goal arrived late through the transition Málaga could not close. There were attacking moments, but the match eventually demanded too many interventions from the goalkeeper.

For Espanyol, ask whether the first pass can escape pressure without stretching the centre-backs away from midfield. Ask whether a wide player receives with support instead of being left to beat a defender from a standing start. At the first turnover, identify the midfielder close enough to delay the counter before Herrero becomes the emergency plan.

Funes should select a newcomer only when the player's current condition and role answer one of those questions. A new defender without midfield protection merely changes the name of the player retreating. A new winger without a nearby overlap inherits the same lonely assignment. The mechanism has to precede the announcement.

Urgency is not an eleven

The strongest counterargument is the table. Three points from seven matches do not buy an extended seminar on continuity. The promoted core has had chances, Málaga have not won and the club recruited precisely because La Liga would demand more. If the staff wait for perfect integration, the season will make decisions for them.

That case justifies targeted change. It does not justify treating every available signing as evidence of ambition. Berrocal can keep his place if his distribution and defending connect to the midfield in front of him. Cruz can enter when his width gives the buildup an exit. Martínez can start or finish depending on the phase Funes wants him to control. The decision stays attached to the job.

Apply the same standard to the promoted core. Continuity is not a reward for last season, just as newcomer status is not a claim on this one. Keep the relationships that still function; replace the role that does not. A mass unveiling would make the team sheet look busy without guaranteeing that one distance improves.

Four answers by nine o'clock

Espanyol visit at 9 p.m. on Friday, October 9. That is the deadline for clarity, not completeness. Funes should be able to point to each newcomer in the squad and finish a sentence: this player helps us exit here, hold this width, connect this midfield phase or protect this transition. If the sentence is vague, the role is not ready.

Watch the first turnover after Málaga advance a full-back. Watch who offers the safe pass when Espanyol close the touchline. Then watch whether the substitutes inherit a recognizable task or merely add attackers as the clock becomes impolite. Those actions will say more about recruitment than the count of summer names in the starting eleven.

By kickoff, Málaga do not need seven symbolic solutions. They need four visible answers to four football problems, assigned to the players ready to perform them. Let Espanyol test that plan, not the panic.
