Manchester United's Kids Need a Path, Not Another Preseason Poster

Preseason opportunity is the easy promise

Manchester United drew 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain after a summer in which young players repeatedly earned attention. Shea Lacey, Jacob Devaney, Harry Amass and even 15-year-old JJ Gabriel have featured in the conversation around Michael Carrick's first full season.

This is the part United know how to celebrate. Academy photographs, fearless cameos and grand language about tradition all fit beautifully in August. The harder part arrives when senior matches become expensive and the bench suddenly fills with safer names.

A pathway needs football details

A real pathway is not a general promise that talented players will get chances. It identifies which role a player is learning, what decisions he must improve and what kind of match can provide useful minutes. Without those details, development becomes a lottery conducted whenever injuries force the manager's hand.

Carrick should leave preseason with a map. Which youngster can enter when United need control? Who changes the pace? Who can start a cup match without the entire senior spine being wrapped around him? If the answer to every question is 'we will see,' the club did not run a development program. It ran a summer exhibition.

The PSG draw was a test, not a graduation

Holding a European champion to a draw in a friendly is encouraging. It also carries all the normal preseason disclaimers: uneven conditioning, experimental lineups and a result that disappears when the competitive season starts.

The value is in the evidence underneath it. Young players handled a larger stage without looking like promotional guests. United should now test whether those habits survive smaller spaces, uglier matches and the tactical responsibility that comes after the adrenaline.

• Assign each leading academy player a defined senior role
• Plan cup and league minutes before the schedule becomes crowded
• Evaluate off-ball decisions as aggressively as highlights
• Use loans only when the destination offers a clearer path

Tradition is only useful when it changes the present

United's academy history is real. It is also too often used as branding for opportunities that never become responsibilities. The current group does not need to be compared with a famous generation. It needs coaches willing to make specific bets.

The draw with PSG gave the young players another attractive paragraph in the preseason story. Carrick's job is to make sure at least a few of them are still in the plot after August.
