Four Manchester United Goals, One Derby Team Sheet
Manchester United's four goals against Sabah came through distinct relationships. Michael Carrick's derby team sheet should reward those links, not just the scorers.
Carrick has a selection problem, not a scoring contest
Four goals can turn a manager's next team sheet into a popularity contest. Michael Carrick should decline the invitation. Manchester United's 4-0 win over Sabah supplied four different final combinations, and those relationships matter more for the derby than a neat list of scorers.
United waited until the 27th minute for the breakthrough. Patrick Dorgu crossed and Matheus Cunha finished at the near post; Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martínez followed before the night was done. The result rewards all four. The September 13 meeting with Manchester City asks which connections can work when the space behind every ambitious touch has a price.
That is the actual decision. Carrick is not choosing who deserves applause for Thursday. He is deciding which attacking links justify the defensive risk attached to preserving them against City.
Sabah lowers the transfer rate
First, discount the opponent without discarding the evidence. Sabah's coach said his centre-backs stayed too deep and failed to squeeze the space. Joy-Lance Mickels also headed wide from inside the six-yard box in the 36th minute, with the score still 1-0. A stronger side can turn that miss into an equaliser and make United's first half feel very different.
The fourth goal carries the same warning. Joshua Zirkzee's backheel helped create the opening for Martínez in the 68th minute, but the goalkeeper failed to control the loose ball. Credit the improvisation; discount the margin. Champions League scoreboards do not issue refunds for context, but derby plans should include it.
Sabah therefore tells Carrick less about whether these players are good enough than about how they recognise one another. Deep, inexperienced defending made the routes generous. City will contest the pass, attack the vacated space and force each relationship to function under a different risk.
Two links change the defensive bill
Dorgu and Cunha owned the first route. United's superiority let the left-back advance high enough to cross before Sabah reset, and Cunha trusted the near-post lane. The derby version cannot be a photocopy. If Dorgu advances, the midfield has to cover the exit; if Cunha drifts, someone still has to occupy the last line. Preserve the timing, then rebalance the map. The cover assignment has to be chosen with the pair, not improvised once City wins the ball.
The second link is more central. Youri Tielemans found Fernandes for the 42nd-minute goal, giving the captain a pass he could attack instead of forcing him to retreat toward midfield and manufacture the whole move. United have spent too many matches treating Fernandes as the emergency service for every phase. Tielemans can reduce that burden by playing forward before pressure closes.
Yet that pairing comes with fewer touches and more defensive work against City. Carrick must decide whether its attacking value justifies the space it may concede. That is a genuine selection problem, unlike the ceremonial exercise of arranging Thursday's scorers by volume of applause.
Mbeumo and Sesko offer the clearest carryover
Three minutes after Fernandes scored, Bryan Mbeumo released Sesko to run behind and round the goalkeeper for the 45th-minute goal. It was Sesko's first start of the season after he scored from the bench at Everton. Carrick described the striker's speed, physicality and willingness to work the last line. Those qualities become useful only when a teammate identifies the run early enough. Mbeumo did.
This may be the relationship with the cleanest derby application. City can leave more space behind than Sabah did, while United may have less settled possession in front of the defence. Still, a runner is not permission to surrender the ball and rename every clearance a transition strategy. Sesko has to offer work when the run is closed, and Mbeumo has to help United reach the moment when it opens.
Carrick owns the decision on September 13. Keep the Dorgu-Cunha timing with cover behind it. Give Fernandes a forward passer without abandoning midfield control. Retain the Mbeumo-Sesko threat without building an evening around hopeful clearances. The scorers made the 4-0 memorable; those adjusted partnerships can make the performance useful.
