The Empty Box Behind Nice's 15 Shots
Nice matched Paris FC with 15 shots and lost 3-0. The equal volume concealed poor chance quality that one returning striker cannot repair alone.

Fifteen shots each. Four on target each. Paris FC 3, Nice 0. The equal volume did not describe an equal attack.
The separation was chance quality. Paris FC produced 2.74 expected goals to Nice's 0.57, according to Maxifoot's match data. The hosts found a penalty, attacked turnovers near Nice's area and finished the afternoon with three scorers. Nice accumulated attempts without repeatedly moving the defence or occupying the dangerous spaces before the ball arrived.
That gap is the problem Elye Wahi's return is supposed to help solve. Nice brought the striker back on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt with an option to buy, and he entered in the 63rd minute with the side already two goals down. He answers a roster question. His arrival does not excuse the club from defining the attack around him.
The problem predates the loan
The opening draw with Lorient had already separated territory from threat. Nice held 60 percent of the ball and took 14 shots, but only one reached the target. The club's own report described second-half territorial dominance as sterile because Olivier Pantaloni's side could not approach the goal with consistency. After 180 league minutes, Nice have not scored.
Paris FC did not merely repeat that problem; they priced it. Pantaloni lamented imprecise crossing, insufficient presence in the area and a lack of automatisms under new principles. Those failures connect. A cross becomes hopeful when one attacker arrives late, another occupies the same line and nobody threatens the cutback. Another delivery added to the total does not improve the investment.
Shot counts are wonderfully obedient employees. Ask them to prove ambition and they will show up with a spreadsheet. The harder question is whether the attempt forced the goalkeeper to move before the strike. Kevin Trapp was seriously tested only by Jonathan Clauss from close range and Xavier Mandza from distance in a brief second-half sequence. Fifteen was volume; danger came in smaller print.
Audit the job before the player
There is a clear case for the loan. Wahi scored nine times in 19 appearances across all competitions for Nice last season. Familiarity reduces some adaptation risk, while the purchase option preserves a decision for later. On those terms, the move is defensible.
The risk is tactical outsourcing. Wahi arrived on August 24 and had one week with the squad before his first minutes. If Nice ask him to alternate between pinning both centre-backs, dropping to connect possession and chasing every approximate cross, the club will have converted one signing into three vacancies. A striker cannot occupy the near post, penalty spot and edge of the box simultaneously, however enthusiastically the recruitment graphic was received.
Pantaloni must define the support before judging the finisher. When Clauss crosses, who attacks the far post? When Wahi checks toward the ball, who runs beyond him? When Nice lose possession near the area, which midfielder protects the first pass out so the forwards can remain high? Those are coaching and squad-selection questions. The loan only makes them more urgent because the option to buy should be evaluated inside a coherent role.
Give patience something to measure
The strongest counterargument is that new attacking principles require time. Pantaloni has said the automatisms are incomplete, Wahi has barely trained with the group, and two league matches are a reckless sample for any permanent verdict. Nice should not tear up an approach because the first away defeat was ugly.
That case deserves patience. It does not require passive waiting for familiarity to arrive by calendar. Nice can measure box entries with support, crosses that find at least two different zones and possessions that end with a cutback rather than a blocked delivery. Those indicators can improve before the finishing does.
The 3-0 score also contained defensive errors, including turnovers near Nice's own area. Fixing the attack alone will not recover those goals. Yet an offence that keeps the ball for long periods without threatening the box increases the cost of every loss: the team accepts risk during buildup without receiving useful chances in exchange.
Le Mans puts ownership on show
Nice host Le Mans on September 5. The test is more precise than whether Wahi scores. Watch the first three attacks that reach the final third. Does one player stretch the back line while another offers underneath? Do wide deliveries have distinct targets? Can Nice create a close-range chance before game state demands urgency?
If those movements appear and the finish does not, patience has evidence behind it. If the same sterile possession produces another stack of low-value attempts, the club will know the problem survived the change at striker. That would make any further attacking purchase an expensive way to avoid defining the job.
Nice do not need fewer shots for the sake of aesthetic purity. They need attempts that describe a functioning attack. Against Le Mans, the most encouraging number would not be 15. It would be two red-and-black shirts arriving in different parts of the box at the same time.
