Mayulu Carried His Second-Wave Job Into PSG's Starting XI

Senny Mayulu created one goal and scored the next as PSG reached 4-0 after 17 minutes at Villarreal. The start validated a defined role without settling the hierarchy.

Mayulu did not wait for the second wave

Senny Mayulu did not have to wait for Paris Saint-Germain's second wave at Villarreal. He started in the front three, stole the ball inside the box to help create Désiré Doué's goal in the 12th minute and scored PSG's third one minute later. A job first defined from the bench travelled into the opening lineup without losing its purpose.

That is the important part of a 6-0 score that invites several less useful conclusions. Paris had four goals after 17 minutes, the quickest any team has reached that total in a Champions League match. João Neves, Doué, Mayulu and Fabián Ruiz were four different scorers. The night looked like unlimited attacking wealth. Squad planning still needs labels more precise than rich.

Sports Oracle argued after the Lyon win that Mayulu's central arrival and Mika Godts's left-sided carry should remain distinct second-wave roles. Villarreal supplied the next test. Mayulu did not merely receive a promotion from substitute to starter. He kept attacking the turnover and the space it opened.

Three minutes showed the instruction

The sequence between Paris's second and third goals is the clearest evidence. Mayulu recovered possession in Villarreal's area and moved it back to Maghnes Akliouche, who found Doué for the finish. On the next attack, a high recovery left Mayulu free to score. He changed from the player extending the action to the player ending it without drifting away from the same dangerous zone.

That is role clarity rather than positional freedom as a marketing slogan. Mayulu was not asked to touch every phase, audition as the permanent centre-forward or decorate possession until a senior attacker arrived. He pressed the first insecure pass, connected the next receiver and occupied the box when the ball returned.

Fabián's contribution made the structure harder to reduce to one young forward. He recovered high in the third-goal move, scored the fourth in the 17th minute and added the fifth after halftime. Neves had opened from a loose corner, while Doué punished a poor attempt to play out. Paris attacked Villarreal's errors with several arrivals rather than waiting for one designated star to turn each mistake into a solo.

A five-goal lead still left a decision

The obvious counterargument is deliciously simple: a starter who contributes to two goals in two minutes should keep starting. Mayulu has now delivered the role against Lyon from the bench and Villarreal from kickoff. Why complicate evidence that appears to have submitted its own lineup card?

Because Villarreal helped build the margin. The hosts failed to clear a corner, played one goal directly out from their own goalkeeper and lost another ball inside their box. Four different scorers in 17 minutes demonstrated PSG's readiness to punish those errors. They did not prove every opponent will offer the same spaces or that Mayulu's best use is identical against a low block, an aggressive press and a match Paris trail.

A 6-0 can become the most expensive kind of free advice. It tells a wealthy club that every choice worked and every hierarchy is obvious. Sofia's rule is less cinematic: promote the responsibility before promoting the status. Mayulu has earned a larger share of the plan. He has not made context optional.

Luis Enrique replaced Mayulu and Akliouche together on the hour, sending on Godts and Ferran Torres with the score already 5-0. Keeping Mayulu on to chase a personal second goal would have been understandable and strategically empty. The choice limited his workload and let the next attacking unit enter with its own work.

David Boly later supplied the sixth as a substitute. PSG therefore won through four early starters, Fabián's second goal and a late replacement. Paris finished with 71 percent possession, 22 shots and 12 on target; Villarreal managed two efforts on target. The distribution matters more than a depth-chart victory because the bench still contributed a separate action after the starting group had settled the night.

Troyes should receive the instruction

PSG host Troyes next. Mayulu's selection should depend on the match plan, but his instruction should remain visible whether he starts or enters later. Press the uncertain first pass. Connect the recovery instead of forcing the shot. Arrive again when the next receiver returns the ball into the box.

That sequence is measurable even when it does not produce a goal every minute. It also gives Godts, Torres and the rest of the attacking rotation room to carry different instructions rather than competing for the same vague label of impact substitute. A squad stays deep when its roles survive a change of names and starting times.

Villarreal did not settle who belongs in PSG's best eleven. It answered the narrower decision that mattered after Lyon. Mayulu's job can begin at kickoff. Paris should keep promoting that clarity and resist the six-goal temptation to turn one excellent start into a permanent throne.
