The Baumgartner-Nusa Pair Behind Leipzig's Ten-Man Escape

RB Leipzig trailed Rot-Weiss Essen with ten men before Christoph Baumgartner and Antonio Nusa entered together. One stretched the left; the other attacked the box twice.

Two substitutes entered one problem

Christoph Baumgartner and Antonio Nusa entered together in the 62nd minute at Rot-Weiss Essen. RB Leipzig were a goal down, a player down and carrying a first half that had produced one shot worth 0.02 expected goals.

Sixteen minutes later, Nusa beat Jannik Hofmann again and found Baumgartner for the equaliser. Four minutes after that, David Raum's free kick found Baumgartner for the winner. Leipzig escaped the DFB-Pokal second round 2-1 because the two substitutes changed different parts of the same attack.

Do not file the comeback under spirit and walk away. Nusa created repeated width and isolation. Baumgartner occupied the area those actions opened. Their pairing gave Leipzig a route and a receiver at the same time, which is considerably more useful than asking one attacking midfielder to become the emergency plan by himself.

A rescue is not a starting lineup

The strongest counterargument belongs to Essen's fatigue. Coach Uwe Koschinat said his side paid for its earlier tempo, and Leipzig's pressure grew after the hour. A Bundesliga club introducing two fresh attackers against a tiring third-tier opponent should eventually create chances. The red card also forced a directness that may not survive a normal eleven-versus-eleven match.

Correct. Baumgartner and Nusa do not earn automatic starts because sixteen cup minutes produced two goals. The first half remains an indictment: Essen had the only shots on target before the break, Seiwald was dismissed for an unnecessary challenge and Leipzig needed nearly 55 minutes to create a dangerous attempt.

The paired roles survive that objection. Whether they start or enter later, one player must stretch the outside defender while the other arrives beyond the first line. If both come toward the ball, Leipzig return to the possession that Essen found comfortable.

Nusa made the defender repeat the decision

Essen had spent more than an hour protecting the middle and waiting for Leipzig's possession to become impatient. The third-tier side also had the more dangerous early attacks. Lucas Brumme punished Castello Lukeba's back pass and Örjan Nyland's slip after nine minutes. Nicolas Seiwald's second yellow in the 44th made every central action more expensive.

Nusa gave Leipzig a different question. He attacked Hofmann from the left often enough that the duel stopped being an isolated dribble and became a repeated demand. The equaliser came when the defender was beaten and the ball arrived centrally before Essen could rebuild the box.

A winger's work is sometimes judged by whether the first cross becomes a goal. That can make persistence look like failure right up to the successful repetition. Nusa's value was cumulative: stretch the defender, make him turn, then ask him to solve the same pace and angle again after the legs have already paid for the first answer.

Baumgartner attacked the action after the action

Baumgartner did not enter to stand beside the first forward and wait for service. Within a minute he had a free header and missed. He stayed available for the next wave rather than treating that miss as the verdict on his cameo.

For 1-1, he arrived where Nusa's work ended. For 2-1, he attacked Raum's dead-ball delivery. The finishes came from open play and a restart, but the job was consistent: reach the central contest after somebody else has forced the defence to face the ball.

That is a humane way to use a player entering a difficult match. Define the run, the area and the relationship. Do not make him prove leadership by repairing every phase. Leipzig had plenty to fix; Baumgartner needed one job he could repeat with conviction.

Schalke can test the pairing without the panic

Leipzig visit Schalke on Saturday still looking for a Bundesliga away win. That match offers a better examination than another cup emergency. The coaching staff can use the Baumgartner-Nusa relationship before the scoreboard and a dismissal dictate it.

Watch the first time Nusa isolates a full-back. Does Baumgartner, from the start or the bench, attack the space behind the nearest midfielder? When Raum has a delivery, does Leipzig place a runner between the defenders rather than surrounding the box with receivers facing it? When the move fails, are those players close enough to keep the next action alive?

Essen gave Leipzig a dramatic answer and an uncomfortable question. The answer was two goals. The question is why the useful relationship appeared only after the match had removed every calmer option. Keep the relationship; retire the emergency as the activation code.
