Thirty minutes is a boundary, not a dare

Manuel Pellegrini supplied Betis with a boundary, not a dare. Isco, he said after the 1-0 win over Real Sociedad, is ready for 30 minutes right now. The useful response is to organize the team around that limit, not see whether the next match can be stretched to 35.

Isco entered in the second half and nearly made it 2-0 shortly after Rodrigo Riquelme's 63rd-minute volley. Álex Remiro stopped the chance, but the sequence showed why the temptation will be strong. Even short of full fitness, Isco can accelerate a possession, arrive near the box and make Betis look more certain about the final pass.

Influence and readiness are different questions. A 30-minute role can be genuine competitive work, neither a ceremonial cameo nor an invitation to repair the match alone. A clear limit gives the coaches and the other ten players a shared responsibility: build the first hour so Isco enters with choices still available.

Other players must own the first hour

The winning goal is the blueprint for sharing that load. Cucho Hernández found Riquelme, whose first-time strike in the 63rd minute beat Remiro. Isco did not have to manufacture the lead; he joined a team that had already created the decisive action through other players.

That distinction protects everybody. Riquelme must be more than the winger keeping Isco's place warm. Cucho needs runners who trust the release. Marc Roca and the midfield behind them cannot wait for one famous teammate to descend and solve the geometry.

The role has to make sense for the person living in it. Asking Isco to change a match for half an hour is demanding but defined. Asking him to supply the team's tempo, chance creation and emotional reassurance from kickoff is three jobs disguised as one name. Betis have enough footballers to avoid that shortcut.

The calendar will bargain with the plan

The strongest case for expanding Isco's minutes is also visible in the match. Betis and Real Sociedad played an even first half. Pellegrino Matarazzo's side created chances to equalize after the goal, including Luka Sučić's shot against the post and an opportunity for Orri Óskarsson. A one-goal margin can make restraint feel luxurious.

Betis are also back in the Champions League after 21 years, according to Cadena SER's match report. The schedule will not wait politely for every returning player to reach perfect condition. There will be nights when Pellegrini's best creator appears to be the obvious answer before the planned substitution window.

That is exactly when the limit matters. Plans are easy to respect while a team is winning comfortably; their value appears when the scoreboard starts negotiating. If Betis ask Isco to solve every early problem, the club will have converted one useful half-hour into a season-long dependency. The calendar is not sentimental, but it is excellent at collecting interest.

The handoff is the measure

The next evaluation should begin before Isco enters. Can Betis press and circulate well enough to keep the game level or take the lead? Does Riquelme continue attacking the box? Can Cucho connect midfield and the front line without drifting so deep that no one remains to finish? A controlled first hour increases the value of every Isco touch afterward.

Then judge the handoff. Isco should enter with a specific problem to solve: finding the weak side, receiving between lines or protecting a lead through possession. A defined assignment helps a returning player choose actions rather than chase the whole match. It also gives teammates a reason to keep owning their roles once the star appears.

Pellegrini said the games are beginning to accumulate. Betis can treat that as permission to rush or as a reason to distribute responsibility now. Friday supplied the healthier sequence: Riquelme and Cucho created the lead, Isco raised the attacking ceiling, and the goalkeeper plus the post preserved it.

Make that handoff deliberate. Thirty minutes of Isco can change a match; the other sixty must belong to a Betis side capable of delivering him a problem smaller than the whole game.
