Ten Minutes Earned Carlos Espí Another Ten

A substitute gave the night an ending

Carlos Espí entered in the 80th minute and scored in the 90th to give Real Madrid a 2-1 win at Espanyol. Ten minutes were enough to change the result. They were not enough to prove that José Mourinho has found a permanent solution for an attack still learning how Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé should share the same spaces.

Espí has earned something more useful than instant mythology: another defined chance. Madrid should build a repeatable late-game role for the recent arrival from Levante, with enough minutes and clear service to judge his movement as well as his finish. Turning him into the emergency lever every time the famous names become crowded would flatter the goal and fail the player.

The winner followed a broken middle

Bellingham headed in Arda Güler's delivery after ten minutes. Álex Calatrava equalized at the half-hour mark after Madrid allowed a runner to arrive free around the area. Mbappé then had two one-on-ones stopped by Marko Dmitrovic, and Federico Valverde struck the post before Mourinho sent on Espí and Trent Alexander-Arnold for the final push.

The winning action came when Yan Diomande and Mbappé worked the ball into the area and Espí found the finish. That is excellent center-forward behavior: stay available while the match becomes frantic, occupy the place where a loose action can turn decisive and finish without asking the moment to slow down.

It is also a warning against giving the scorer responsibility for everything that preceded him. Madrid had become stretched, the midfield partnership of Valverde and Bernardo Silva struggled to control the center, and Espanyol kept finding ways to advance after surviving the early pressure. Espí did not repair those distances. He made one decisive action inside them.

Define the job before enlarging the story

A start is the understandable reward to demand. Goals are the striker's currency, Madrid needed one and the recent arrival supplied it when six new signings were also making their debuts. If selection is supposed to reward performance, the scorer cannot disappear behind the established depth chart by Wednesday.

But development is not a vending machine: insert goal, receive starting place. A start against Real Sociedad would change the demands from attacking a tired defense for ten minutes to connecting the press, holding the ball and finding space for much longer. Espí may be ready for that. The Espanyol cameo simply cannot tell us.

A responsible staff can still reward him. Give him another planned window rather than waiting until panic chooses the timing. Tell the wide players what kind of service his introduction is meant to create. Judge his first pressure, his occupation of the center backs and his response when the first cross does not arrive. Confidence grows better around a job description than around a rescue story.

The stars still own the larger problem

Mourinho argued that Madrid's bench helped win the match and said the squad will be required across four competitions. He is right. The point of depth is not to keep talented players in cold storage until the established lineup fails; it is to create different solutions without making every substitution feel like a referendum on status.

Espí offers a more fixed reference near goal. That can help when Mbappé drifts toward the ball or Bellingham attacks from deeper positions. It does not absolve Madrid's main attackers of combining earlier, nor the midfield of keeping the team compact enough to sustain pressure. The youngster should complement the central plan, not become cover for its confusion.

This is where the human part of selection matters. An emergency hero can become trapped between impossible expectations and irregular opportunity. One miss in the next cameo should not erase the finish at Espanyol; one more goal should not force a promotion the weekly work has not supported.

Wednesday should contain another real chance

Real Madrid hosts Real Sociedad on August 26, only four days after the opener. That compressed turnaround is the clean reason to use the squad Mourinho praised. Whether Espí starts or enters again, his minutes should be long enough to reveal the rest of his game and early enough that the team is not merely launching crosses under deadline pressure.

Ten minutes at Espanyol earned another ten at minimum. The next decision belongs to Mourinho: convert a wonderful finish into a repeatable developmental role, or wait for the next emergency and ask a young striker to save the adults from their spacing again.
