Güler's Three Corners Cannot Excuse Madrid's First 83 Minutes

Arda Güler supplied the late deliveries that turned 3-1 into 4-3. Real Madrid should formalize that role without calling the first 83 minutes destiny.

The miracle had a delivery address

Minute 83: Roma 3, Real Madrid 1. Minute 90: Roma 3, Real Madrid 4. The familiar version of this story will reach immediately for European destiny, the badge and whatever paranormal clause lives inside the competition anthem. The useful version begins at the corner flag with Arda Güler.

Carlos Espí scored from the first late delivery after Pierluigi Gollini could not hold Endrick's header. Endrick headed in from another Güler corner. Antonio Rüdiger completed the comeback by attacking a further Güler set piece. Three goals, three deliveries and one substitute giving chaos a fixed starting point.

That does not make the comeback less dramatic. It makes it more instructive. Madrid did not summon three goals from atmosphere. They found repeated pressure through one specialist, loaded the penalty area with different targets and kept forcing Roma to defend the same question.

Güler changed the geometry before the score

Güler entered in the 59th minute, with Madrid already struggling to connect midfield and attack. Roma had pressed the buildup man to man, Courtois had made early saves and Donyell Malen's second-half double turned control into a 3-1 lead. Madrid's starting possession had too often ended with a player receiving under pressure and nobody moving the next defender.

The substitute offered a different relationship to the ball. He could receive facing the final third, threaten a pass before the defense reset and give every dead ball a consistent curve toward goal. The corners were the decisive output, but the role matters beyond them: one player took responsibility for making the next action arrive quickly.

Madrid should make that responsibility explicit. When a match becomes stuck between harmless circulation and hopeful crossing, Güler should be the first route to a sharper final pass and the default owner of attacking set pieces. A specialist is not a luxury when the team keeps manufacturing the exact situation he solves.

Do not invoice the bench for the starting plan

The strongest defense of José Mourinho's selection is obvious: substitutes exist to alter matches, and Güler may have benefited from tired legs, accumulating fouls and a Roma side protecting a lead. Starting the same player does not guarantee the same corners, the same panic or the same finishing. Bench impact is a role, not an insult.

That argument should protect Güler from a simplistic demand to start every match. It should not protect the starting midfield from review. AS described Madrid as broken between the lines before the changes, and Cadena SER recorded the same problem against Roma's man-oriented pressure. A seven-minute rescue cannot be used as evidence that the preceding 83 were secretly working as designed.

The better decision is conditional. Keep the option of Güler as a second-half accelerator, but move the trigger earlier. If Madrid cannot play through the first line for two or three consecutive possessions, do not wait for the scoreboard to become theatrical. The Champions League does not award extra points for jeopardy, however committed Madrid appear to the genre.

Espí and Endrick made the deliveries honest

A corner taker still needs targets who attack rather than observe. Espí entered in the 79th minute. Endrick had arrived earlier. Both treated the six-yard area as somewhere to reach now, not after the defender had completed the risk assessment. Rüdiger then supplied the final collision of timing and commitment.

That matters to Madrid's squad plan. Endrick and Espí changed this match from the bench, but their value is not that every late appearance must end in a goal. It is that Mourinho can introduce different penalty-area behavior without reducing the final phase to one more isolated action from the usual starters.

The comeback therefore belongs to a chain: Güler's delivery, the substitute forwards' movement and Rüdiger's willingness to join the last wave. Remove one link and the legend becomes a loss with attractive corners. Keep the chain, and Madrid have a rehearsable late-game mechanism rather than another story about inevitability.

Move the trigger before Leipzig forces it

Real Madrid host RB Leipzig on October 21. The next test is not whether they can repeat three goals in seven minutes. That would be spectacle wearing a lab coat. The test is how quickly Mourinho reacts if Leipzig's pressure disconnects the first pass from the front line.

Watch the first period of stalled possession. Does Güler enter before Madrid require a rescue? If he starts, does he still receive with runners ahead rather than being asked to solve every phase himself? On the first attacking corner, are Espí, Endrick and Rüdiger given distinct zones to attack instead of sharing one crowd?

Rome gave Madrid a thrilling answer and an uncomfortable question. Güler can turn dead balls into live danger, but the team cannot schedule that clarity for the 83rd minute. Make him the set-piece owner and bring the intervention trigger forward. The mythology can wait for the montage.
