Serie A Analysis · Como
Liberali Needs Freedom Beside Paz, Not the Same Job
Mattia Liberali scored on his first Serie A start for Como while Nico Paz supplied a goal and an assist. Manchester United should test the relationship, not end it.
The first start came with room to move
A first Serie A start can turn every touch into a small referendum. Como gave Mattia Liberali a kinder and more demanding assignment against Fiorentina: begin to the right of Nico Paz, then recognize when the attack needed him somewhere else.
Liberali had an early chance before scoring in the 32nd minute. Paz scored four minutes later and assisted Tasos Douvikas in the 56th as Como won 3-1 on October 18. One established creator produced a goal and an assist; the new starter found a lane of his own rather than tracing the same map.
Preserve that distinction against Manchester United on October 21. Liberali's role should have boundaries, defensive help and a clear starting point. It should not shrink into a ceremonial wide position merely because the next opponent makes caution feel sophisticated. Freedom is not the absence of an instruction; here, it is permission to read the space Paz creates.
Two creators need different permissions
Como lined up with Liberali to the right of Paz in a 4-2-3-1. The diagram can suggest duplication: two creators looking for the same central space. The match offered a better arrangement. Paz could connect the attack; Liberali could begin wider, move after the pass and arrive where the defence had stopped looking.
That relationship asks for coordination, not identical freedom. When Liberali comes inside, the right side still needs width behind or outside him. When Paz drops toward the ball, Liberali needs permission to occupy the line he leaves. The arrangement must leave him a route inside without turning every possession into an invitation to wander.
Players learn roles faster when the instruction describes a relationship. 'Stay wide' is a location. 'Move inside when Paz has drawn attention and the outside lane is covered' is a job. One demanding truth gives a first-time starter more to work with than five reassuring arrows on a tactics screen. It also makes the review honest: Como can judge the decision, not merely the destination.
Florence was generous with evidence
The strongest counterargument is the match itself. Fiorentina left Como space and still scored through Marin Pongračić in the 42nd minute. Liberali and Paz had struck four minutes apart, but that burst does not guarantee the same room against United.
Nor should one start turn Liberali into a permanent solution. His goal was the first of his Serie A career. A player can be encouraged by a role and still need protection from the weekly demand to reproduce the headline. The answer is not to hide him from the next test. It is to define what success looks like when the finish does not arrive.
Against United, count whether Liberali receives facing forward, whether his inside movement creates an outside pass and whether he can recover his right-sided position without losing the attacking reference. Those are development measures. Another goal would be a bonus with excellent timing.
A scoreless night could still be progress
Manchester United make the relationship useful to study precisely because the Florence evidence is small. If United crowd Paz, Liberali should become the next route rather than another body waiting near him. If Liberali is pressed toward the touchline, Paz must offer an inside release without collecting the ball at his teammate's feet. Freedom works only when it enlarges the other player's decision.
Como can protect the pair with the players around them: outside width when Liberali moves in, a midfielder close enough to secure the turnover and a central target occupying defenders. Then Liberali can be judged on timing, recognition and recovery—not on whether one first-time starter produces a second perfect introduction in three days. Paz also gains a partner whose movement can open the next decision instead of repeating his first one.
Florence gave Como the pleasant version of development: first start, first goal, away win. The next match can provide the useful version. If Liberali and Paz still create different decisions for United even when neither supplies the finish, the partnership will have passed a more important test than another highlight.
