Watch Como Before Paz Receives the Ball

Nico Paz owned the highlights in Como's 4-1 win over Manchester United. The repeatable part arrived earlier, when the whole side pressed on the same cue.

The picture was tilted before the pass

By the time the ball reached Nico Paz, Manchester United were usually solving an old problem. A passing lane had been closed, the next receiver had been hurried and Como had already moved the game into the area where their No. 10 could hurt it.

Paz scored after two minutes, made Como's second and scored the third in a 4-1 Champions League win. He was the obvious star. He was not the beginning of the explanation.

Watch Como before Paz receives the ball. Cesc Fàbregas's side closed around United in groups; the visitors' pressure more often arrived one player at a time. One team kept presenting its creators with a settled picture. The other kept receiving with the next decision already closing.

Pressure worked as a chain

United chose to wait in shape rather than follow Como man for man, a staff decision Bruno Fernandes described afterward. Como accepted the offered ground and moved the visiting block until a receiver could face forward.

The revealing action came when a safe pass became slightly unsafe. The nearest Como players did not admire the turnover opportunity from separate postcodes. A forward screened the return, a midfielder squeezed the receiver and the back line stayed high enough to keep the next ball in the same neighborhood.

That is the difference between pressure and running. Running is merely transport when everybody chooses a different destination. Como's distances turned separate efforts into a chain: one player forced the pass, another attacked it, and the players behind them made escape expensive. United often pressed the person in front of them. Como pressed the possession.

The 594 passes were defensive work too

Como completed 594 passes, not as a decorative claim on control but as part of the same mechanism. Possession moved United. The counterpress then prevented the match from changing shape after a loose touch, allowing Como to attack again before the visitors could spread the field.

Paz supplied the elite part. His early finish found the far corner, his pass released Tasos Douvikas four minutes after halftime and his second goal punished another disrupted United possession. Como put eight of 11 attempts on target and produced 2.04 expected goals, according to Opta. The score was emphatic; the shot profile was not a lottery ticket.

No tactical diagram can promise that Paz will score twice every week. The repeatable gain is smaller and more valuable: recover the ball while the opponent is still narrow, and the next creator receives before the defense has rebuilt the picture.

Nine absences explain some of the margin

United arrived without nine players because of injury, suspension or illness. Matthijs de Ligt was making his first appearance in 325 days after a serious back problem. Their spacing and resistance were poor enough to flatter any opponent, and one night against a depleted side is not a tactical patent.

Keep that discount. Do not erase the work it leaves behind. A weak opponent can donate the first mistake; it cannot complete Como's 594 passes or place eight of their 11 attempts on target. Como had already beaten Leipzig 4-1 at home in this league phase before losing 3-2 at Feyenoord. The mechanism has appeared more than once, even if its price rises away from home.

The failure condition is visible. Once the first pressure is bypassed, a high back line and tight midfield can turn into open grass. Collective aggression without protection is just a group mistake arriving on schedule. Fàbregas has to preserve both halves of the idea.

Take the distances to Lens

Como visit Lens on November 4. Lens have taken 30 shots and put 12 on target across their last two Champions League matches without scoring. Their insistence on shooting makes the next meeting a cleaner examination than another argument about United's crisis.

The useful evidence will arrive just after a Lens effort or cleared cross. Como's nearest midfielder must close the outlet, the back line must keep the second ball within reach, and any retreat has to happen as one movement rather than four private recovery runs.

Paz supplied Wednesday's brilliant actions. In Lens, measure the less glamorous gap between Como's first challenger and last defender. If that distance stays compact after the shot, the idea travelled. If it stretches, the 4-1 belongs more firmly to one generous night in Lombardy.
