Will Tamarit's Clear Roles Reach Beyond Son and Bouanga?
Xavi Tamarit has answered LAFC's interim-leadership question with a promise of clear roles. Against Vancouver, clarity must make more than Son and Bouanga responsible for the attack.
Clarity is the brief
Nobody needs an interim coach's manifesto. LAFC need the first 20 minutes against Vancouver to make Xavi Tamarit's promise of simple concepts and clear player roles visible.
Los Angeles FC have named Tamarit interim head coach. That answers the first question created by Marc Dos Santos's dismissal: someone now owns the run-in. Tamarit joined LAFC as an assistant in January, so he is not arriving to learn names while the Western Conference keeps moving.
He inherits an 11-8-9 team in sixth place with 41 points. Vancouver arrive at BMO Stadium leading the West on 50. An interim label can lower the amount of ceremony. It cannot lower the competitive standard.
Clarity should mean that every player knows what creates the next advantage, not merely that Son Heung-Min and Denis Bouanga know where to collect the ball. LAFC changed the coach because the collective performance stopped matching the roster. The first repair has to be collective too.
Two stars cannot be the whole instruction
LAFC's own preview makes the imbalance plain. Son has six MLS goals and 13 assists; Bouanga has 14 goals and eight assists. They are the club's only two players with at least eight league goal contributions. Vancouver have five: Brian White, Thomas Müller, Édier Ocampo, Bruno Caicedo and Mathías Laborda.
That comparison does not prove Vancouver possess better attackers. It shows a difference in how many players opponents must track as consequential. If LAFC's first progression, final run and recovery pressure all point toward the same two names, the attack becomes easier to anticipate precisely because the stars are so obvious.
Tamarit's clear roles should therefore include the people around them. Who gives Son a pass he can receive facing goal? Who runs beyond Bouanga when the winger draws the second defender? Which midfielder protects the move so a lost duel does not send Vancouver directly at the back line? A role is useful when it changes a teammate's options. A label on a formation board is only office stationery.
Continuity has a strong case
The reasonable counterargument is that an interim coach should simplify, restore confidence and let the best players decide the match. LAFC's roster is whole again after the international window, and six players combined for 10 goals for their countries. Son scored three for South Korea and returned as his national team's all-time leading scorer with 59. This is not a group begging for an emergency tactical invention.
Tamarit is right to preserve an LAFC identity rather than announce a revolution after a few training sessions. The club's early season included an unbeaten opening run, and the Los Angeles Times reported that the change followed two wins in 13 matches across all competitions, not proof that every earlier idea had become useless.
But continuity cannot mean repeating the dependency that made the decline so difficult to stop. Simple football still distributes responsibility. A third runner, a midfielder trusted to break the first line and a fullback whose overlap has protection are not complications. They are the support that lets a star receive one opponent instead of three.
Vancouver makes the audit public
Vancouver provide a severe first examiner. The Whitecaps have scored 60 league goals, own a plus-31 goal difference and spread their production across the pitch. White has 17 league goals, while even Laborda, a defender, has four goals and four assists. LAFC cannot defend that variety by waiting for one obvious source to receive the ball.
The same principle applies when LAFC attack. The first twenty minutes should reveal whether Tamarit's language has become behavior: an outlet appears before pressure closes, a runner moves when Son comes short, and somebody other than Bouanga attacks the space created by Bouanga. Supporters do not need a coaching dissertation. They need to recognize the jobs without being told where to look.
A win would help LAFC's playoff position, but the first verdict should be smaller and more durable. If Vancouver can name only two threats by the end of the night, the interim brief will already be too narrow. Give Tamarit's clarity to the whole team, and LAFC's stars can become the sharpest parts of a functioning attack instead of the instruction sheet itself.
