Thirty-Nine Minutes and Madrid's Missing Second Route

The dismissal changed the match, not the opening

Begin with the strongest objection to any tactical verdict. Two first-half Atlético Madrid challenges might have brought red cards, and Dean Huijsen's dismissal early in the second half materially changed a derby that Atlético won 2-1. Ten players cannot be assessed as eleven, however much a tidy theory would prefer it.

Now rewind. Madrid's first shot on target arrived in the 39th minute, from distance. Atlético had already spent much of the half circulating the ball and making the visitors wait for a transition. The dismissal made a limited attacking plan harder. It did not invent the limitation.

That leaves a narrower job for the international break. Madrid must be able to move an away match on its own terms when the first break is unavailable. Elite attackers can turn one loose ball into a chance; an away plan cannot treat that talent as its only destination.

Waiting is a plan with a short shelf life

Atlético understood the threat. They kept protection behind the ball, advanced cautiously and attacked Madrid's left often enough to keep the visitors' forwards far from the places where they are most destructive. The Guardian's match analysis recorded Atlético with roughly two-thirds of possession and more than twice Madrid's shot total. Possession alone proves little. Here it described which team was making the opponent answer questions.

Madrid's double pivot of Aurélien Tchouaméni and Valverde can protect space and launch a counter. What it did not consistently provide was an extra angle that pulled Atlético's first line apart. Arda Güler had to search for the game rather than receive it between stable passing connections. The front two waited high, the midfield protected against loss, and the distance between those ideas became the home side's most comfortable defender.

There is a respectable case for caution at the Metropolitano. Atlético are built to punish a careless central pass, and an open game would have offered Giuliano Simeone and Jonathan David more running room. Caution should decide where the risk is taken, not eliminate the next pass. A side can keep rest defence and still send one midfielder beyond the first pressure while a full-back holds the width. Madrid too often chose safety without purchasing control.

The away sequence is now a pattern

One quiet derby could be filed under rivalry tension. The road sequence makes that filing harder. Madrid needed stoppage-time Carlos Espí winners at Espanyol and Elche, lost at Real Betis and then lost at Atlético. Two late rescues do not prove every away performance was broken. They do show how often the result has depended on intervention arriving after the underlying route stalled.

The derby made the problem hard to miss. Antonio Rüdiger's 89th-minute header gave the score tension, but it did not turn the preceding half-hour into a functioning response. A late set piece can alter a result. It cannot supply the connections Madrid lacked before it.

Madrid are six points behind Barcelona after seven league matches. That gap is not a September verdict. It is enough to make the method urgent. A team chasing the leader cannot keep budgeting for a stoppage-time repair whenever an away opponent denies the first counterattack.

Give the ball a second destination

The repair does not require Madrid to become a slow-possession tribute act. It requires the first progressive pass to lead somewhere other than a crowded winger or an isolated sprint. Mourinho can use the break to define a second destination: Güler receiving behind the first press, a full-back arriving outside him, or one of the forwards dropping while the other attacks the vacated channel. The exact mechanism may change. The responsibility cannot.

That would also make the defensive recruits easier to judge. Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella all started the derby, yet the team still spent too much of the contest without a repeatable exit and Huijsen was later dismissed. Buying defenders does not automatically shorten the distance between midfield and attack. If the first pass out is predictable, the back line keeps defending the same phase until somebody loses a duel.

Mourinho's strongest counterargument remains valid: different first-half disciplinary decisions could have changed the numbers and the result. Fine. Build a plan that survives the argument. The next away opponent should have to defend more than Mbappé's first run and Madrid's final set piece.

The next evidence comes before the crisis

The international break gives Madrid time without offering competitive proof. Training clips and declarations about commitment will not answer this column. The evidence begins in the first 20 minutes of the next away league match: how many players occupy the pressure on purpose, and how often does a forward receive with a nearby continuation rather than four defenders and a prayer?

Refereeing debates will return because refereeing debates always return. Madrid's more controllable work is to make them smaller. If the next difficult away match contains several clean exits, sustained attacks and a midfield that can advance without a turnover invitation, the derby can become an early warning. If Madrid again wait for one break or one late header, the first 39 minutes at the Metropolitano will remain the more important evidence.
