After 13 Winless Matches, What Would Change RSL's Plan?

One transition contained the whole problem

At the start of the second half in Seattle, Sergi Solans stole the ball from Jackson Ragen and reached Andrew Thomas, but a heavy touch allowed the goalkeeper to intervene. Seattle went the other way, Paul Arriola combined with Danny Musovski and RSL trailed in the 48th minute. One end showed an opportunity that still needed too many perfect actions. The other showed two players making a simple exchange and finishing from the edge of the box.

Real Salt Lake had given Pablo Mastroeni the competitive response he wanted. They still lost 2-0, extended a club-record MLS winless run to 13 matches and reached 284 minutes without a goal. Effort can be real without being sufficient.

That sequence did not cause four winless months. It revealed the current difference between competing and functioning. RSL can still produce pressure, recoveries and promising positions. The final relationship arrives late, improvised or not at all.

The absences explain this lineup

Any fair diagnosis starts with the available team. Alex Katranis was injured in the warmup. JuanMa Sanabria was on international duty. Stijn Spierings made his first appearance since an August ankle injury. Mastroeni changed five starters after the 3-0 loss to Vancouver, and academy product Luca Moisa started as one of the attacking midfielders.

There is more disruption coming. Moisa was due to leave Thursday for a United States under-19 camp, while Kobi Henry and Colin Guske were due to depart after the New England match. Luc de Fougerolles had received his visa but would not be eligible until October 10; Dašan Žagar was still waiting for approval. A coach cannot construct automatisms from a depth chart that keeps becoming a travel document.

That is the strongest counterargument to any demand for a sweeping change. RSL were depleted, remained only three points from the play-in places after the Seattle loss and showed more resistance than they had against Vancouver. Changing the coach or the formation for the pleasure of movement can make a damaged team less coherent, not more.

The streak exceeds the injury report

Thirteen league matches without a win cannot be assigned to Wednesday's absences. RSL last won in MLS on May 16 against Colorado. They are 1-9-4 away from home this season, have now been shut out three consecutive times and sit on the longest league winless run in club history by their own account.

The Seattle match also contained enough attacking evidence to reject the idea that the players simply stopped trying. RSL generated six shots in the opening 16 minutes after Musovski scored. Thomas made another important save from Solans. Morgan Guilavogui reached the end line before Cristian Roldan stripped him. These were entries, not a functioning supply chain.

The recurring issue is role sequence. When Solans receives behind the line, who arrives for the cutback? When Guilavogui carries toward the end line, who pins the centre-back and who occupies the second ball? When the first press wins possession, which midfielder provides the immediate forward pass? Formation labels will not answer those questions. Rehearsed jobs will.

Give New England observable criteria

The next home match against New England should not be framed as another request to believe. It should be a decision point with observable criteria. RSL need to state internally what would count as evidence that the current attacking plan can recover and what result or performance would trigger a structural intervention.

The criteria need not be exotic. Produce multiple chances from combinations inside the box rather than hopeful distance. Create a repeatable route from the two attacking midfielders to the striker. Counterpress with enough spacing that one lost touch does not expose the back five. Most important, make substitutions change a relationship rather than merely change a tired name.

Mastroeni has managed 214 RSL matches, so the club has ample evidence about his strengths and limitations. That history argues for a measured judgment, not endless deferral. If ownership believes he remains the coach to rebuild the attack, it should give him a specific mandate and judge it. If it no longer believes that, the club should not ask a record streak to make the announcement for it.

The table raises the price of delay

Being three points from the play-in positions is not a reason to wait. It is why the next decision matters. A modest improvement could still rescue competitive meaning from the season; another month of admirable effort and empty scorelines would spend the opportunity while pretending to preserve calm.

The Seattle performance offered a useful floor. The group responded after its coach questioned the Vancouver showing, survived a depleted lineup and created moments that could have changed the match. Keep that seriousness. Remove the vagueness around what comes after it.

The mechanisms must answer

Against New England, count coordinated entries, clean central receptions and runners arriving for the next pass. If those mechanisms appear, the result can become more than an interruption to a streak.

If they do not, 13 matches have already supplied enough sample for Real Salt Lake to change who owns the solution.
