Where Did Real Sociedad's Exit Go After the Red Card?

A goal vanished; so did the outlet

Luka Sučić appeared to have made it 3-0 for Real Sociedad. A VAR review instead erased the goal, sent Jon Martín off and restored a 2-0 score around the 64th minute. The same sequence removed a finish, a defender and the match state Sociedad thought it had secured.

Elche equalized. Sučić then won the match 3-2 in the 90th minute. The late answer deserves its applause, but it cannot serve as a tactical explanation for the preceding collapse. Once Sociedad had ten men, clearances stopped leading anywhere and each defensive action merely booked the next one.

With eleven, pressure had a destination

Job Ochieng's involvement in all three Sociedad goals makes the contrast useful. With eleven, his running gave pressure a destination. Sociedad did not need the majority of possession to threaten; it needed the next pass to find a teammate already facing useful space.

After the dismissal, that route became unreliable. Sociedad sank without a dependable player high or wide enough to make Elche turn. A compact back line can survive pressure. It is much harder when every clearance returns before the block can step forward. Losing a defender hurt; losing the exit made the missing defender feel larger.

Ten men still need somewhere to play

Adding a defender and narrowing the distances is the obvious response to a red card. It can be correct. It can also create the appearance of security while conceding every meter ahead of the box. Elche finished with 20 shots, 10 on target and 58.4 percent possession; Sociedad had 13 attempts and six on target. Possession alone proves little. The volume of repeat attacks is harder to wave away.

The next version needs clear responsibilities, not a decorative formation number. Who stays available after the first clearance? Which midfielder can travel with that player? Where does the far-side option begin so a recovery can become possession rather than another hopeful return? The first safe action matters more than whether the emergency block is written as a 4-4-1 or something tidier.

Keeping an outlet is not the same as abandoning a forward near halfway and hoping. The distances behind that player decide whether a clearance can be contested and whether the second ball has a Sociedad shirt close enough to matter. An exit is a chain, not a lonely runner serving as tactical furniture.

Sučić eventually provided the decisive release and Ochieng completed his third goal involvement. That was excellent execution in one moment. It was not evidence of a stable ten-man mechanism. A winner can settle the score without settling the diagnosis.

The freak event, the familiar problem

The strongest defense of Sociedad is also the most humane one. The VAR swing was unusual: players went from believing they had a three-goal lead to learning they were two goals ahead and a man down. Brief emotional and positional disorder was reasonable.

Yet the underlying condition was ordinary. Teams protect leads under territorial pressure after substitutions, failed presses and fatigue as well as red cards. Training a reliable outlet is not preparation for one bizarre review. It is preparation for the familiar minutes when the ball keeps coming back and the match needs somewhere else to breathe.

That rehearsal also has to survive the first failed attempt. Elche were not going to retreat because one Sociedad clearance reached halfway. The value lies in repeating the same escape positions until the opponent must respect them, giving the defensive line a reason and a few seconds to advance.

Atlético supplies the next proof

Real Sociedad host Atlético Madrid on September 13, then Bournemouth in the Europa League on September 17. Neither match requires another red card to recreate the important part of the problem. A broken press or a lead under pressure will be enough.

Watch the first clearance in that state. Is there a prepared outlet? Does a midfielder travel with it? Can Sociedad hold the ball long enough for the defensive block to leave its own penalty area? Those actions will say more about the lesson from Elche than another formation graphic.

Sučić earned the winner and Ochieng earned the praise. The coaching staff received something rarer: evidence of a weakness without the cost of dropped points. By Atlético, the first escape route should belong to the plan rather than to the next player asked to rescue it.
