Oyarzabal Answered Málaga in Five Minutes, Then One

Málaga twice cut Real Sociedad's lead to one. Mikel Oyarzabal answered within five minutes and then within one, revealing a central response worth carrying into Europe.

Five minutes, then one

Adrián Niño scored for Málaga in the 54th minute. Mikel Oyarzabal answered in the 59th. Pablo Martínez made it 3-2 in the 66th; Oyarzabal restored the two-goal margin in the 67th. Real Sociedad's 5-2 win belonged to the attack, but its most useful feature was how quickly the attack refused to let anxiety settle.

Twice Málaga reduced the margin to one goal. Twice Sociedad made the next meaningful phase an attacking one. The final score says the match became comfortable; the timing says comfort had to be rebuilt.

Oyarzabal supplied the finishes, not a magic button. The repeatable part was the route toward him: keep an attacking reference in the centre, support the next contested ball and turn the moment after a concession into a football problem rather than an emotional one.

The captain occupied the useful gap

Takefusa Kubo opened the scoring in the third minute and Orri Óskarsson added the second in the 26th. Oyarzabal did not have to become the lone source of danger. His central position could remain one option among several, which is exactly why Sociedad still had a clear destination when Málaga disrupted the match.

His first goal followed Málaga's attempt to change the emotional direction of the match. The second came after Jon Martín won the ball high, according to Cadena SER, and Oyarzabal completed the reply. One response came from re-establishing the attack after kickoff. The other came from refusing to let Málaga's next possession become a period of pressure.

That is the mechanism Sociedad should keep. The nearest forward remains connected to Oyarzabal, a supporting player is close enough to contest the next pass and the team resists turning one concession into a long retreat. A goal against does not require an emergency formation. It requires the next duel to have an owner.

Five goals can flatter the repair

The objection is obvious. Málaga sit bottom of La Liga, and a seven-goal match can turn every attacking choice into evidence of a grand solution. Sociedad also conceded twice. That is too much resistance from the scoreboard to declare their control repaired.

An immediate reply reduces the damage without explaining why the door opened. The useful formation is still the one that survives contact with the next turnover, not the one that photographs best beside five goals.

So separate the claims. Málaga did not prove that Sociedad's defensive control is fixed. The two replies did show a better behavior after control failed. That is narrower, less glamorous and more useful.

Lillestrøm changes the question

Real Sociedad host Lillestrøm in the Europa League on Thursday. The opponent and competition change, but the test can remain precise. If Sociedad lose the ball or concede, do they recover their distances quickly enough to contest the next pass? Can Oyarzabal stay central while the players around him preserve separate routes? Does the first forward action have support, or is it merely sent away from danger?

The answer does not require another brace. Oyarzabal's value in Málaga was not only that he scored twice; it was that his position gave the team somewhere coherent to go at the exact moments the match threatened to become incoherent. A captain can settle a side without slowing it down.

Make the response travel

Three consecutive league wins and 16 points have put Sociedad fifth. That is enough form to trust and not enough evidence to ignore the two goals conceded. The club should carry both truths into Europe: the late control problem remains, and the response to it has improved.

Against Lillestrøm, count the action after the warning. If the first backward step restores spacing, the first duel is supported and the next forward pass finds Oyarzabal with options around him, Málaga will have supplied more than a seven-goal afternoon. It will have shown Sociedad how to keep a setback from becoming a phase of the match.

Five minutes became one because the route grew clearer. The next task is to make that route available before the scoreboard supplies the alarm.
